I'm getting really drat sick of the "smart" conservatives and centrists who try to defend it as anything more than a wholly evil ideology. They wrap themselves in knots to try to rationalize "fiscal responsibility" as a good thing but absolutely refuse to connect the dots to what we're seeing now, which is leaving people to die of something that's easily preventable. And the worst part is they have Trump as an easy scapegoat for all these problems. Conservativism isn't the problem, it's all just Trump messing things up.

Trump is every conservative argument amped up to 11 and never let them for a moment forget it. They weren't hoodwinked or bamboozled; this guy and his policies are what they have been clamoring for the past 40 years.

There used to be Burkean conservatives, Rockefeller conservatives, and Movement conservatives in the Republican party during the 40s and 50s. But the Movement conservatives started to dominate with the nomination of Goldwater. By the time Reagan was elected movement conservatives were primary force of the Republican party, and the new millennium has shown that the only things left in the GOP are the movement conservatives and neo-nazis.

During the GOP primary of 1964, Nelson Rockefeller represented the side that accepted some sort of the New Deal was necessary and good for America, whereas Goldwater wanted to tear the entire welfare state to the ground. Of course, Rockefeller lost that primary, hard. When the grandson of The Rockefeller cares more about the welfare of the poor than the other candidate, you know things are rotten.
