I donated $5 to josh and helped distribute his ballot petition at a Bernie Sanders rally I worked at. still a better outcome than with the $150 I donated to Sanders not to mention all those hours. josh could buy an electric truck or whatever and it would still be better than Bernie giving it to lunch friend joe biden

Can someone say what's up with this Jess character? I assume given that she's running for Senate, that she's not an actual socialist like these guys are saying. Is that a good assessment?

doesnt call herself a socialist, isnt a member of a socialist organization, doesnt have the endorsement of any socialist organization that i can see, and is running as a democrat. doesnt seem like you can with any good faith call her a socialist. looks like shes a progressive democrat who is probably better in most every way to the incumbent but shes not a socialist.

As an advocate, a tenant, a feminist, a democratic socialist, a union member, and a proud daughter of an immigrant family, Julia has dedicated her life to fighting for social justice in her community."

I really can't stress enough how utterly useless the DSA has been in this cycle. They wouldn't even touch our race without a local endorsement. Only problem is, DE is the only state without a DSA. We tried to tell them that and they told us to make a fake chapter to force an endorsement in. We considered it! But then we asked how many volunteers and money national would provide, and I was told practically none and less than $1,000. I've raised $60,000 by shitposting on C-SPAM and the national DSA can't even raise $1,000. They have no idea what they are doing imo.

Im not in the DSA though I work with a lot of the folks and have contacts in it locally and nationally. I think theres a lot to constructively criticize the DSA on too including how it interacts with candidates and their campaigns. think what youre describing ties in with what i posted earlier about josh collins, some DSA members/endorsed candidates and others though, which is that there is no democratic structure in the form of a party or even party-like organization to hold candidates accountable to their programs, or to even develop a program in the first place. theres no larger point to running a candidate for office if theres not an organized movement which is driving their run and which is calling the shots. socialists understand that class struggle is what changes society and that while elections are useful, theyre only useful if theyre a genuine expression of the movement behind them and the candidate/campaign itself is deliberately rooted in those social movements. think a lot of people believe that running candidates is the way to get people organized but in my experiences its the opposite, electoral campaigns actually put enormous strain on organizations and without a strong and stable organization, even if a campaign is successful what you end up with is an individual member of parliament/council/congress with no accountability to the movements they need to be representing. think its an important discussion and debate for socialists to be having right now too. it was brought up in another thread how AOC has let people down in many ways and I think that feeling is fair. but I also dont think it should be viewed as a personal or deliberate failing on her part or anything, its an expression of not having the kind of organization im trying to describe to 1. hold her accountable, but also. 2. help support her in office. when socialists enter elected office its as enemies to the rest of the elected body, always should be. its very hard to resist being coopted or capitulating in that kind of position if there isnt a movement outside the halls of power that again will keep you accountable but also agitate and to support your efforts.

not trying to criticize this campaign specifically or anything but based on what you said I think people reading this should ask which would maybe be more beneficial long term: this campaign, or using the same time/resources to help start a DSA/whatever other org you like in deleware since there isnt one already? same thing applies to josh collins or whoever else. basically i think socialists outta read jane mcalveys book "no shortcuts" and then apply those same lessons to elections. have to build in a patient and deliberate way the organizations which can eventually lead to working class power, and theres no way to cut the process short or skip important steps in any kind of principled way.
|
# ? Aug 11, 2020 14:33 |
But what you're describing exists locally and isn't needed from national orgs. I would say like 50 to 60% of the nascent Delaware leftist movement works on this campaign, and a large chunk of the rest of them work on the other local leftist campaigns.

There are organizations in Delaware that do this, like Network Delaware. And this campaign has trained countless local and young organizers now because that's been a goal since day one. If you phone bank with us, engage with the Slack, and help us win, you'd see this.

thats great! Im not directing this at you specifically necessarily unless the shoe fits, but the larger topic the thread is about. if youre trying to appeal to me specifically to do work for the campaign I wont be sorry. tying in to what Ive been droning on about all thread, I only put work into campaigns which are for candidates who are members of or endorsed by the organization Im a member of.

apropos to nothing posted:the main lesson to take away from josh collins is that socialists and workers need an independent working class party with a genuine democratic structure where the candidates and campaigns which are run are decided on democratically by the membership. and that would extend to where and when the campaigns would be run, and the actual nature of how they are run. not just determined by individuals making individual decisions to run. theres also been some examples where the labor/left vote has been split in primaries or general election like in seattle with shaun scott last year or minneapolis with ginger jentzen a few years back there was a time when people gave deep thought to a man named "Ironstache"
