I finished Sailor Moon (the first part, now I’m on Sailor Moon R) there was a lot of plot at the very end which felt kinda like tonal whiplash, but it was cool because I like the Sailor Guardians so I kinda cared when everyone started dying but not really and then the OP played at the dramatic start.

I can kinda see why people think Crystal isn’t that good cause from what I understand so far the “filler” that makes the show more slapstick/lighthearted is kinda what makes me care a lot about the cast when plot happens.

Also I have a suspicion that there’s not gonna be anything as unintentionally funny as that second Elite Four Heavenly King that makes random objects evil, but I hope I’m wrong.
im pretty sure thats the season where a villain of the week is a literal, actual active volcano. like not corrupted. just a volcano.

also yeah the manga (and crystal) had very little characterization for anyone who wasnt usagi. there's a few characterization beats i like more, minako is treated way more as the second in command with a serious side in the manga, but by and large the manga is more interested in bouncing from romantic drama to romantic drama. the 90s anime sort of has that same plot structure, but it gives things time to breathe.

plus even as one of the four characters who actualy gets screentime in the manga, mamoru is still a way better character in the anime, where hes actually allowed to be funny and kind of lame. he feels like a much better fit for usagi.

ui is very specifically something that's difficult to tap into in the first place and gogeta is exponentially more powerful than goku or vegeta but that doesn't mean he can just snooze his way into UI

and goku training in the manga (lol) still only lets him tap into sign and it still exhausts the poo poo out of him

That’s why I kind of like the live action Sailor Moon series, it’s pretty low budget but in my opinion it kind of combines the best of both worlds (including expanding on some stuff from the manga and adding plenty of new twists of its own).

That said, SuperS notwithstanding I generally still vastly prefer the 90’s series over the manga as the characters feel a little more fleshed out in some ways (also manga Rei is kind of dull all things considered).

On that subject it kinda feels weird that they’re trying to push romances between a fourteen year old and a college freshman. Like four years isn’t a big deal if it’s 18 and 22 imo, but yeah.

Mamoru's 17 at the start according to the manga, dude skipped a grade or two.

Jojo 4 anime also good.

I didn't realise there was any real disagreement around that.

I don't actually understand why people say the part 4 anime is bad

The part with the three fights glimg on at once was excruciating when it aired, and honestly a lot of the direction was just okay so I felt bored more than I did in any other part. Part 4 has a lot of good concepts but it failed to portray them in an engaging way for me.

Also I think Araki is better at enemy of the week style suspense and horror than the so-called slice of life town crap people seem to love so much

i think the part 4 manga does a good job building a sense of place with the town and just having stories with josuke hanging out with people, and imo araki is best at comedy. part 3 was intolerable because ti was entirely monster of the week and maybe 3 fights were actually interesting

GorfZaplen

I haven't and probably won't until the part 6 anime finishes but I'll keep that in mind. I probably shouldn't let my dislike of the anime color my view of the work itself

Endorph
Jul 22, 2009

i think the manga works a lot better because as a manga its a go at yuor own pace thing so it feels breezier, plus theres a fair few fights the anime kinda drags out

as mentioned above harvest in the anime is like a two-three episode long shaggy dog story while in the manga its such a goofy little thing that you can read it in like ten-fifteen mintues and just parse it as a goofy little misadventure josuke had. heck even if you're a slow reader and it does take you 40 minutes it doesnt feel as sluggish as an anime imo, since you're dictating the pace there's less frustration when it does things like pan over the same shot or whatever

the best thing about part 3 is the ova cause it looks really weird and cool in a way that gives it its own distinct identity and its take on the d'arby and dio fights are incredibly directed and animated

One thing that sometimes the 2012 anime absolutely has over the manga is that, consistently, since part 1, has had excellent sound design and sound direction. (spoilers for Part 3 in case someone browses here and has never watched/read it) The moment Dio's brain gets mashed like potatoes and it's taking its time to regenerate is fantastic because both the audio editing + the direction of it, with a stellar job from both Takehito Koyasu and Patrick Seitz, absolutely sold me on it.

Then again, the manga is also loving badass because Araki would just... flex and do some absolutely stunning visuals for the manga like it was the most casual thing.

Been rewatchin it in bits and pieces and pre-egypt part 3 is Good actually. I always forget all the insane impressive poo poo w cg and camera work they pull off in that premiere, and the parts ppl complain about most are all of two eps(really just one for me cuz I like dark blue moon) in the early middle, unless you really were that bored w tower of gray or something.

Part 4 is still almost entirely monster of the week. I liked it more than SDC at least in the manga because a) I thought a greater proportion of the fights were interesting and b) there's slightly better connective tissue between the fights than just "we're still heading to DIO, here's another one of his goons".
