Just got the XXL mod and I'm really liking the decoupled board rotation and manual catching

Yeah, I just installed that last night. Decoupled rotations aren't working properly on a couple of tricks they should right now(looking at you hardflip) but it works on most of them. I also adjusted the pop height and flip/shuv timings to make it a bit more realistic and enabled late flips to do kickflip underflips. It's a pretty great mod.

e: Need to install the map editor next so I can throw down some ramps and benches wherever I feel like.

...And I tried turning off decoupled rotations since hardflips don't work and the whole reason I wanted it was for fronstide flips and it's not possible to turn it off with 1.0.

e: yeah, uninstalling and reinstalling the mod fixed it. Also, late flips means I can do casper flips now!

Try the stats menu mod, I can do hard flips with the hardcore button checked. Well, mostly. Hardflips are hard.

https://skaterxl.mod.io/stats-menu-board-wear-shape-menu

Game feels so much better with less pop though, even though it's a lot harder to do super creative stuff.

e: I think I misunderstood and you were just recommending that mod

e2: yeah, that looks like the same stat menu mod that's in XXL. It is great, though some things appear to be broken right now like body spin speed. Also, typing in a value doesn't work. You have to use the sliders.

So I will learn to live with it. Because I can live with it. I can live with it.

I gave Skater XL a try. Now I've played both Skater XL and Session, which I think compromises the bulk of the current-ish gen skateboarding games.

Both of them are pretty fun and I would like to see either (or both) develop further and actually make a full game. It's an entertaining few minutes loading either one up and fooling around, but both of them seem like they're missing a little something to make it feel alive. Could be having a scoring system, or mission goals, a progression? It might just be that they don't have any pedestrians in the world, so it's your identity-less character skating in an empty void.

Anyway it turns out both Skate 2 and Skate 3 (and presumably the first Skate) work pretty well in the PS3 emulator RPCS3 now, and my computer is just beefy enough to play them smoothly -- so I'm going to give those a good try again for the first time in like 10 years.

They're both very much "make your own fun" type games, like beam.ng is. They're never going to be more than niche toys with small obsessive communities unless they fix that, but I'm not sure I want them to. Having to sit through a guided tutorial in Session was enough to make me realize all I want is a sandbox world with stuff to do tricks on.

But they definitely need to address if it if they don't want to be instantly made irrelevant when whatever Skate game EA is going to poo poo out releases.

Yeah, these are definitely make your own fun games that cater more toward people who skateboard irl. If you don't think it's fun to spend 30-40 minutes to get a line down perfectly or figuring out creative ways to skate things that may not have been intended then they might not be the games for you. Nothing wrong with that.

Very nice. I haven't tried that yet but I did manage to get a hardflip over the truck that's next to it.

FYI if you want to try something similar there, the physics are wonky around the sign because of the transition sticking off the corner of the building. The game really likes to make you lean in weird directions there.

Really wish custom map makers would stop setting the lighting at 0.69 seconds before sunset and making the entire map a horrible orange glow. There's a berlin map that looks really good but the lighting is ugly as gently caress.

Well if you tap both triggers you’ll stay centered, leading to this (bottom tweet, SA doesn’t like showing just one of a thread I guess?)

I've been playing a lot of MX Bikes recently, and its pretty fun. Like the older MX Sim, its applying a 'simulator' style of racing games to motocross and supercross racing but is a much newer game and is available on steam.

This video is a little cheesy but shows the vibe pretty good:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVC3EuBIIdM

Riding supercross that smooth is hard as hell, I can usually make it around that track but not riding any big rhythms.

The main difference between MX Bikes or MX Sim and most motocross games is that your control inputs don't control how fast you turn, but how quickly you change your lean angle - almost like you're flying a plane. It sounds weird, but imo feels way closer to the actual experience of riding than most mx or other motorcycle racing games do. You have to be much more concious of set-up, turn in They both also focus heavily on first person view rather than 3rd and it really changes how the game plays. If you like either MX games, riding mountain bikes or dirt bikes in real life, or racing sims in general and thing mx is cool, I'd recommened checking MX Bikes out. Online is super easy and you can find people just chill lapping a track if you want a non-solo vibe but aren't looking to race.

MX Bikes and MX Sim are pretty similar, but I would recommend MX Bikes over Sim - its way newer and much more user friendly and seems like a much more capable engine with potential to grow. Sim however has the more active community with full sim-replica racing of the USA SX and MX plus MXGP seasons, and way more bikes and tracks available. The downside is that the stock tracks in Sim suck, and finding a good beginner track can be hard. MX Bikes is starting to catch up with community tracks and is way more playable mod-free.

If you give it a shot I'd highly recommend watching a controller setup video on YT and maybe a beginners guide video if you're struggling, it takes a while to figure out the control input concept and get used to how the riding works. Start on a 125 or 250f and ride some of the more relaxed tracks and take it easy - almost every jump can be over-jumped if you take them all pinned, the game really rewards flow and rhythm if you want to go fast.

I'm gonna cross post this in the sim racing thread too, but I think it has a lot of cross-over interest.

So, I think I've figured out how to do a half-decent looking impossible. It's actually a 360 inward heel but you pop and do a slow heelflip and then do the 360 shuv a split second later instead of during the pop motion.

https://i.imgur.com/WjZyDCy.mp4

e: forgot to mention that you have to have late flips enabled for this to work right and it's still really difficult to time properly

If the only thing they tweaked was how easily your skater eats poo poo when you bump into things at the slowest speed possible i'd be happy. Like yeah I know its supposed to be a simulation but come on even my knees aren't that ratfucked irl. It kind of seems like they're working on that so I'm stoked.

On the steam update thing they said it was fixed, which is great. Hopefully they'll be able to keep updating the game at a good pace.
