hahahaha a buddy has a french VHS dub of DYRL from the early 90s that he transferred to an as-good-as-possible-480i version, and it's even worse than I remember: here's a non-even-4k still of the exact same frame:  lol here's a still from the first scene of Lain.  and the 1080p bluray  did pioneer add in the lens flare for the VHS? There's absolutely subs out there, though I don't know if this was retroactive fansubbing after the popularity boom in the west, or if it was in the early days of the fandom.
