The SF one does a neat perspective trick for the Golden Gate bridge.

When I was a kid I loved lego. I only bought one actual kit and the rest was just accumulated basic pieces. A couple of weeks ago for no particular reason I was looking at kits on Amazon and bought a little street sweeper, and last night I played with lego for the first time since probably 1978.

The quality seems just as good, but there were a lot of specialized parts I'd never seen. And now I have a tiny lego banana.

EDIT: I downloaded a lego CAD program that has a built-in renderer. Shockingly easy to use.

I own and love the Tokyo set. YMMV but I mainly bought it because I've spent a decent amount of time in Japan so it was awesome to build a set of things I've been to.

Hell yeah. Glad you enjoyed. The great thing about LEGO is that, more often than not, all those specialized pieces have been used for a ton of weird, different things. Those bananas have been eyebrows on dragons, for instance. Also, which CAD program? I love Stud.io and Mecabricks, myself.

It's called Studio 2.0. I've worked with 3d software for over 20 years so I didn't even read the instructions, just jumped in and started messing around. I can see that just like regular modeling you need a plan if you want to accomplish something, but I'm looking forward to doing some virtual building, and generating some nice renders.

Also holy poo poo the kits get expensive.

I think for a lot of the cityscape Architecture sets, they end up being “famous buildings in a row”, which is fine, and can get you some interesting SNOT techniques, but its maybe not really representative of the city. For example, the buildings in the Las Vegas model aren’t even ordered like they are on the strip, and just lol if you think anyone thinks about the Encore casino when thinking of Las Vegas landmarks.

That’s a long preamble to say that the San Francisco does a great job of avoiding this because it has depth. From the use of forced projection, both dramatic (the Golden Gate) and subtle (Alcatraz), to layering the Painted Ladies in front of the skyscrapers, to depicting how hilly the city is, it really stands out. One of the best in the line.

Isn't that the model they replaced into the build because of the shooting?

No, they replaced Mandalay Bay with the Bellagio, which imo looks better and is more iconic anyway.

The Encore is still rear end though.

No but I did pull it off the shelf recently after like 2 years and could not remember exactly where it separates. It’s definitely more fragile than I remembered when i built it.

Lego Berlin is fairly dull because the city doesn’t have much of a skyline outside the tv tower. I only own it because I lived there.

Presumably so it fits in with that set already released. Essentially it’s a Part 2.

Both sets have Ollivander's, and the previous one didn't have the Leaky Cauldron either.

I guess the Leaky Cauldron would be like a "modern" pub (in quotes cause it's wizards but from what I remember it just looked like a typical back alley boozer) right? They might be hesitant to do that where they're fine with like, old timey saloons and stuff.

You only really see it in the 6th movie and the colour grading in that film is as hostile to bright colours as it is possible to be.

In other depictions (theme parks, games, other lego sets) it's much brighter.

I was up late last night and it occurred to me that instead of fumbling around in Studio I could download instructions for a real set and try to construct it virtually. I found something that looked easy and gave it a go.

Although I couldn't find a couple of pieces (even after searching for brick numbers online) I learned alot about the program and am encouraged to make more of these until I'm ready to design my own.

I think the US is dumb for not using Celsius
Studio also has the option to just straight up put a set number in and it will lay out all the bricks you need. Then you just grab them and build. Just go to file > import > Import official lego set

Yeah, the colour grading in the film changes it - having been to the studios and seen the set, it's lurid orange backed by pink-purple. Lego have got it exactly right.

Looks like they've chosen: Ollivanders, Scribbulus, Quality Quidditch Supplies, Florean Fortescue's Ice-Cream Parlour, Flourish and Blotts, Weasley's Wizard Wheezes.

The film set is:

Left hand side: Gringotts, Scribbulus, Ollivanders, Wiseacre's Wizarding Equipment, Florean Fortescue's Ice-Cream Parlour, Flourish and Blotts, Weasley's Wizard Wheezes.

Right hand side: Potages, Mr Mullpepper's Apothecary, Slug and Jiggers, Eeylop's Owl Emporium, Quality Quidditch Supplies, Madam Malkin's.

So, they've replaced Wiseacre's with Quality Quidditch Supplies. As a result, the right hand side of the street seems too insignificant to make a second set (although Madam Malkin's makes an appearance a couple of times in the books).

I would guess that Gringotts is iconic enough to deserve a set of its own, and that's why Ollivanders and Scribbulus have swapped locations.
