What is Dual Universe? Dual Universe is a first person based space simulation sandbox MMO in development by the Paris-based game development studio, Novaquark. It was designed to combine elements of Eve Online and Star Citizen, as well as Minecraft, No Man's Sky, and Space Engineers. The game was kickstarted back in 2016 and is now entering beta on August 27, 2020. Backers will get access to the beta one week earlier on August 20, 2020 at 2pm UTC (10am ET). The game consists of one vast shared solar system that is fully editable with player driven economies, politics, trade and warfare. For me the game really feels like Space Engineers on a grander scale with some Eve elements. Instead of playing with 30-50 people on a Space Engineers server, you are playing thousands in a single solar system. Some Key Features
Development Roadmap Should I play? It is important that you go into this game knowing that it is not yet content complete and it is not completely stable. They have made huge strides in the time that I've played the game, but there is definitely still a lot more work that needs to be done prior to release. If you can't deal with issues cropping up that interrupt your game play, then you should wait longer and not hop in at the beginning of the beta. The game also moves at a much slower pace than games like Space Engineers. Crafting can take a lot of time, especially for large and complex objects. Some of the most complex components can take over two weeks to craft. However, you can drastically reduce these times by training talents and expanding your industry. Traveling to distant planets without warp drives can take hours. This game also has a pretty serious learning curve. While a lot of the systems, such as mining or building, share common traits with similar games the differences are enough that it is wise to watch the tutorial videos once or use in-game or out-of-game reference materials to learn the finer points to save on a lot of frustration. Currently the player base is fairly friendly and willing to help answer any questions in either the in-game chat or official discord channels. Additionally, the Novaquark support team is very active in the discord and go to great lengths to resolve problems, help players and track bugs. That being said, the game is mostly playable and can be incredibly fun if you enjoy these kinds of games. I've been testing the game on and off for the past year and a half and I feel like I've already gotten my money's worth of enjoyment from it and I see a ton of potential in it's future. How to play? The game uses a subscription model that is planned to be $6.99 USD/month. Like Eve you can purchase subscriptions using in game currency after release. You will need to pay for a subscription to participate in the beta unless you bought a supporter pack prior to August 17th or are gifted a beta key from someone who did. Supporter packs are no longer available. To play the game you will need to purchase a subscription after August 27th, unless you are lucky enough to find someone willing to share an extra key with you. Wait, a subscription fee for a beta?! Developer's response: quote:We know this move is quite unusual. As said before, the changes in the subscription model have been discussed internally for months. We knew that going for a monthly subscription during the Beta might raise some eyebrows. However, among all the alternatives, it seemed like the most reasonable one. Here is why: Playing with Goons You can be a member of multiple organizations and organizations can be members of other organizations, so feel free to join whatever orgs appeal to your play style or create your own. Below is a list of goon guilds that I have been informed about. To get your group added to the list, shoot me a PM with any info you would like included. Goon Groups:

Community FAQ https://docs.google.com/document/d/1qzsYBxgM0_bXrecBhfJJ__4n_43ZCrIY5r-X5fskKZo/edit Wyldy Inappropriate Getting Started Guide] The crew over at Wyldy Inappropriate put together a google doc with getting started info and tips and tricks. You can check it out here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Jddl3E7QnLmMc9JRZvoKZ4dQZTpjmp31Uq448hXoOCs/edit?usp=sharing Beginners Guide to Dual Universe Here is a pretty good guide that covers a lot of the main gameplay loops, although some of it might be outdated by now. https://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/static.www.novaquark.com/communication/DU_BG+v1.0.pdf Getting Started You start on the planet Alioth at one of 10 districts. Be warned, it will be likely be fairly laggy and expect some FPS drops, especially if you are joining in right at launch. The initial load into the game can take a long time (I had one friend that took over 40 minutes to load the first time) while it builds the voxel database for local constructs and terrain. After that first load, it is much much quicker, especially if you get away from the starting area. As tempted as you will be to just skip the tutorial and rush out, you need to resist and do at least the first tutorial until you have gone to the Sanctuary moon and placed your Sanctuary Claim Unit. You get some critical items like your Repair tool, Sanctuary Claim Unit, and a starter hovercraft by doing the first tutorial. It is best to go slow during the tutorial and try not to rush too far ahead or it might break. If you have any problems with your tutorial, use LeftShift + PageDown to skip that section or LeftShift + PageUp to repeat a section. If you are going to join up with the Wyldly Inappropriate goons then you should see their guide for information about where to settle on the Sanctuary moon. Otherwise, good real estate is often near a market place or one of the shuttles to Alioth. Once you have a good flying plane or space craft, travel time on planets and moons isn't a huge deal. Once on the Sanctuary moon, you can deploy your speeder to get around quicker. With a bit of ingenuity, you can turn that hovercraft into a plane just by rearranging the parts. Just move all of the atmospheric engines to the rear, rotate the stabilizers horizontally so they become wings, and then right click on the seat and select Autoconfigure -> Flying Construct. Now, just hop in, hold LeftAlt+Space to raise your hover engines to maximum height then pick up some speed, pitch up and zoom above all the trees and mountains. Be careful making sharp turns or slowing too quickly as you may lose altitude swiftly. At the time of this writing, they had disabled trees and some surface rock collisions because they were loading in too slowly in some cases causing rage inducing accidents. If your speeder becomes damaged, you can make Scrap into your nanopack and use the repair tool to fully repair any damaged elements. Voxels can only be damaged in pvp and will not be damaged in a collision. If you have the inclination, you should probably head back to Alioth and do the rest of the tutorials. They give a lot of talent points and some give money. Bugs and Support This game is still pretty early along in the beta phase and it has a lot of bugs. Nearly all of them are fairly minor and not game breaking, but they can be annoying nonetheless. About 95% of all issues you encounter can be resolved just by relogging. If relogging doesn't fix it, there is an ingame support chat channel that doubles as a global chat where you can ask other players for help. You can also submit a ticket on the Dual Universe website or talk directly to moderators and admins in the official Dual Universe discord channel here https://discord.gg/dualuniverse. They are usually happy to help resolve bugs if they can or direct you to the support page if you need to submit logs or a bug report for the devs to look into the issue. Tips and Tricks

Okay, what features are in the game right now? I'd be interested in giving this ago, but I'm not in the mood to file a chargeback because this turns out to be a 50gig download for what amounts servers of 20 people building dick shaped voxel spaceships that can't even fly.

Pretty much everything listed above is in game and working for the most part unless I specifically mentioned it as not implemented yet. Construct vs Construct PvP is one of the newest additions to the game and without getting too NDA breaky, it has occasional issues with targeting that need to get ironed out before it is really solid. At the moment, you can gather resources, claim territory, buy/sell on the markets, form organizations, travel anywhere in the solar system, build bases/ships/planes/space stations/etc, use the LUA programming, pirate ships, setup industry pipelines, alter the terrain how you like, be a space trucker, etc. They have about 56,000 people signed up on the forums, but I can't imagine that they are all contributors that are playing the game. They do have about 1500+ people in the discord section that is restricted to players that own the game. There are no individual servers, it is all one world that everyone plays on at the same time. These last few tests the pop hasn't been very high, excluding the stress test they had a little bit ago, because they are about to wipe the server for the beta launch. Most of the people playing lately have been people who are experimenting, learning to play, or saving their construct blueprints. They don't list server stats anywhere, but if I had to guess from my observations there must have been at least a couple hundred just on the starting planet based on the amount of chat and active ships/people I saw. While the game has been up in Alpha it is typically only up for 96 hours at a time, Thursday through Monday morning then they perform updates the other days. Though they had it up for a couple months at a time back at the beginning of the whole Covid-19 thing. When the beta starts it supposed be up all the time. If you do signup before the beta, the next play test is this Thursday, Aug 13 at 14:00 UTC until Aug 17 at 14:00 UTC. Depending on how that goes we might get another one before the beta. https://www.dualthegame.com/en/server-status/ Another caveat is that the game does have a pretty serious learning curve, but after you do something once it starts making sense. cmdrk posted:sounds too good to be true. whats the catch? It is essentially an early access game still and I expect it will take awhile for them to iron out all of the issues and add in the rest of the promised features like infantry combat. Most of the core pillars are in place, but like any early access things can get janky sometimes. You will most definitely encounter bugs and server problems that can interrupt your game play. Relogging tends to fix most issues and I've never lost progress to a bug, but I have been stuck out of game for a few hours at a time when I wanted to play due to server issues. I'm a bit leery of their decision to charge a subscription fee for the beta as that might indicate they are worried about not having enough of a cash runway to make it to launch, but it also gives me a bit of hope that if they are able to become sustainable during beta they will delay launch until the game is truly ready instead of rushing it out the door in a years time.

I was interested in trying this but gently caress them for charging a sub for beta. Am I reading that correctly? If you don't buy one of their early access packages they will charge a monthly fee for you helping them test their game?
|
# ? Aug 13, 2020 18:25 |

You are reading it right. If you don't buy a supporter pack by August 17th, then you stuck paying $6.99 /month for access until release. If this is a game that you think you would like to support and play throughout the duration of the beta then the supporter pack is totally worth it in my opinion. To me it isn't much different than buying an early access game on Steam and if you go into it with a friend then it is $30/each for roughly a years worth of game time, plus an extra 3 months of game time for one of you after launch. If you are interested in just giving the game a try, then I'd recommend waiting at least a couple months. Like most beta launches, I expect this is going to be a bit rocky. Give them some time to work out any kinks then pay $7 for a month of play time and see if you like the game. After beta ends, then you will be able to buy game time using in game currency.

The number of beta invites wasn't really clear on the pledge page, but they did clarify in a post on the forums a little while back that your alpha access will continue through beta and that every beta key is an invite that you can share so you don't need to save one for yourself. So with a sponsor pack you can invite two people. NQ-Naerais DU Alpha Forums posted:The Beta Keys in the supporter pack are marked as “giftables”. If I have only one Beta Key and I give it to someone else, does that mean I won’t be able to play Beta? cmdrk posted:i'm not sure any dev is going to have a reasonbly performant game that has to trac lotsa little voxels bits flying around whilst pleasing CLANG. starbase will probably have the same problems. It's not quite Space Engineers or Empyrion where your ship will break into pieces on collisions. For collisions, most of the time the voxel don't end up being damaged and instead they absorb part of the impact depending on the materials used, shape, and thickness then transfer the rest of the damage through the ship into the functional parts like engines. If a functional part becomes too damaged, it becomes inoperable but can still be repaired. PvP damage is a bit different, but I haven't seen enough of it yet to know how everything is affected and I'm not sure what info is publicly available about that yet to keep up with the NDA. I've definitely seen ships with enough holes punched through the voxels to the point that they look like swiss cheese though. We also don't have to worry about CLANG striking moving parts, since we don't have unstable moving parts like pistons or rotors and I don't know of any plans to add them in.

Good news friends. They just announced they are giving backers and anyone with a beta invite early access to the beta starting this Thursday, August 20th at 2pm UTC. It looks like invite codes will be given out on or before Aug 20th. NDA is staying active until the full beta launch.Dual Universe posted:We’ve got some great news! They have said the beta is going to be up 24/7 minus maintenance times. One of the reasons they are charging the subscription fee is to cover the costs of keeping the servers up nonstop. As far as maintenance times goes, they have been doing nightly reboots around 4am ET during the tests that take less than <5 minutes. I imagine that will continue into the beta and then whenever they need to bring it down for patches.

Bad games goons have an org - some of us have been playing for a long time. e: The game is absolutely chock full of armchair lawyers, ceos, physicists, you name it that quickly reveal themselves to be idiots that you can blow up easily for fun. I do highly recommend brushing up on your parabolic and kinematic eqs, or at least watch a youtube video that goes over classic motion, to assist your shipbuilding. Being able to plan your torque from adjustor placement and the ability to do a TWR calc will save you tons of anguish. FireWhizzle fucked around with this message at 19:36 on Aug 19, 2020 |

Early beta is starting in half an hour for everyone that backed the game at any point prior to August 17th. There is a patch out now, but beta invites have not gone out yet to share with friends. They said they are hoping to get the beta invites out today, but it might not be until tomorrow or the day after if they have problems with their new system. They are putting together a new website for the beta launch on the 27th and the invites are tied together with that. NDA is still active for one more week until the official beta launch.
