Falling a smoldering tree is really badass because as soon you knock out the face cut, the whole thing sucks in a shitload of oxygen and you get flames and poo poo shooting out the pie cut. And they can smolder for months. I was on a crew rebuilding a fence line in a burn out on USFS land, which was about ten miles long. Basically the fire had come through and completely melted the fence, we just followed the line of crooked rear end T-posts and krinkled wire for about two miles, and felled anything big enough to fall on us while we were working. The saws would get so full of ash that about one o'clock we had to change the filters and clean the saws because the actual filter would be the exact same color as the plastic (black as night), and the chains would dull out on trying to cut through the carbonized trees and brush. We thankfully had showers, but we ended up clogging up the pipe with ash so eventually they told us to go bath in a nearby creek prior to actually bathing in the shower. After that spike, my uniforms were so full of ash and sweat that I could literally stand them up. It was a gnarly-rear end project. Not particularly difficult, but the ash gets into everything. I eventually had to toss the uniforms because all the carbon in them made them so stiff that ripping the crotch of the pants was as simple as getting into a truck.
