Seems way more complicated than "pay us 50 bucks or we shut off pain_relief.exe"

Personally I'm most excited for when the first like 4 generations of this all go offline because the companies got bought and gutted by a private equity firm, leaving you with a chunk of metal in your skull that needs to be surgically removed.

One of the more prescient (and horrifying) bits in Neil Stephenson's The Diamond Age is a throwaway line about a court stenographer wearing AR-type goggles to do stuff. He mentions that this is the first-gen AR tool; second-gen was eyeball implants, which lasted as long as it took for hackers to take them over and blast porn pop-ups directly into your brain, at which point they went back to the goggles that you could, y'know, stop using

That's correct. Musk has explicitly said that he is a Culture fan and that his device is inspired by neural laces. He also gives his SpaceX ships Culture inspired names. It's very weird. The Culture is a form of late stage communism but Musk is a billionaire union buster.

I think he’s socialist in that, once all his conditions are met (capitalism pushes us into a technological singularity where everything is done with Science Magic and money is meaningless) he will support not hoarding resources, mainly since it will no longer make sense to do so when the air is full of nanomachines that print you a banana or a race car when you think about wanting one, and also the AI overlords won’t let him.

Thinking about James Adomian is a fairly good antidepressant in general, and you just made me think of the Maron In Space video series he did for IFC, but now I can’t find it online, and am kind of in an emotional tailspin.

The Diamond Age is specifically written to be "Post-Cyberpunk". Nells father Bud is a super jacked up cyber-man who gets quickly killed at the beginning of the novel
