From a dev standpoint I'm sympathetic because it's nearly impossible to be subtle in a video game accounting for all the different hardware setups of players. You can hear the killer's footsteps it's just about level with the ambient sound so you really have to isolate it. But if you tweak the audio source by even a fraction of a percentage it'll be way louder than the ambient and too obvious (and sure enough it was patched that you can hear him sprint across the lawn from your computer). As for the kidnapper he will get you if you end the night with a single light off and it is very asinine because your character just immediately passes out when doing the last task. The game should give you a prompt so you can check.

It sucks to say but I think a lot of design decisions are to stretch the game beyond 2 hours to circumvent refunds. A full perfect playthrough on normal is about 90 minutes, easily double that for trial and error learning process.

On the other hand MrKravin received doxxing attempts and death threats because he called out Reflect Studios for using Rides with Strangers kickstarter money to fund all these projects and only now that it failed are they saying they'll finish their obligations from 2016 maybe in 2021. Reflect didn't instigate but they also didn't temper and I think creators have a moral obligation to tell their fans to gently caress off if they do something reprehensible like idk harass McDonalds employees over nugget sauce. So probably won't be supporting them in the future.

Oof, thats a bummer. Didn't know about the devs history.

I do agree that it's a tough balancing act with the difficulty balancing but I think the game should have just avoided the instant kill mechanic even though it clearly is there just to force you to restart. Missing him come in should just lead to another situation where he's in the house but you have a chance to recover at the cost of wasting more time hiding.

Also I know it's just a game and its silly to complain about stuff like this but, they went out of their way to provide an in universe justification for why your internet and lighting and windows and all that are faulty but expect me to just think the proper response to a serial killer being INSIDE MY HOUSE is to just hide in a closet for 5minutes then go back to work? lol. The game being across multiple days makes that even more goofy, at least welcome to the game 2 seemed to be a single night (at least from the footage I saw) which makes that a little less immersion breaking.

Kravin had a bad experience with them a few years ago which is why he won't touch any of the games for his channel, although I don't know what happened.

The dev also released an update for WTTG2 earlier this year that lets them manipulate individual games (presumably for streamers to have a new experience?). They used this (when a streamer said they seemed to act like an rear end in a top hat online) to make their stream impossible to play by spawning killers constantly. They did this for 2 hours, not with scripts, but manually. Then they threatened to leak DM's.

Also Rides with Strangers is apparently having all assets remade, so that game is pretty much dead.

I really liked the investigation aspect. It gave you clues but didn't hold your hand with really anything. I liked that a lot of the puzzles were well designed in that there wasn't any moonlogic involved they tell you how to solve it and you just really have to find the parts.

I think my biggest issue with it is that it never really felt like I was "investigating" anything because so much of the map was blocked off or empty and progression eventually became gated by stuff like finding a key in one of the 200 drawers in a mansion. It was pretty good for an adventure game but wasn't no Obra Dinn.

The Sinking City has been delisted from almost every platform and Frogwares released a statement about it:

https://twitter.com/Frogwares/status/1298245160921374721

Basically the publisher Nacon has tried to claim complete ownership of the IP, withheld royalties, released unlicensed products without attribution, tried to put an illicit copy on a third party subscription service (I'm assuming Microsoft), and even cited emergency COVID laws for protecting businesses despite posting profits down the line.

My guess is some dumb executive was like "we bought that one Lovecraft game, we own this other one right? Oh, no? Well gently caress it, let this small independent company take us to court in a global pandemic lol."

You can still buy a DRM free copy directly from Frogwares which means all the money goes directly to them. A few stores still have it like Origin.

As critical as I am of Epic the EGS exclusivity probably saved Frogwares from closing their doors permanently.

Wasn’t the Sinking City one of the humble choice games this month? I haven’t tried to claim the code for it but I wonder how this news affects the humble choice copy.

I mean, if you're a successful actress and you go out of the house in a skirt and without underwear, knowing that paparazzi are just waiting for opportunities like this and that it has happened many times before, then there's really nobody you can blame for it but yourself.
No, the Humble game was the recent Call of Cthulhu, which is just as janky, but much less charming and creative. Can't blame you for mixing them up, though, they're so incredibly similar in premise and presentation that I'm still halfway convinced many people never even realized they're separate games at all.

Anyone been playing Golden Light? Extremely great atmosphere and audio direction. The moment to moment gameplay might not be anything to write home about itself but the whole package put together makes for a truly unique experience. Def worth 13bux even if its still early access imo.

I thought about it, but the style and oversaturated colors remind me of some of the worst of early 3D 90s adventure games in a bad way, so I've been leery to try.

There's only one ending. I'm much the same, except I stopped playing because I found the gameplay physically unpleasant and watched the rest. Think they flubbed it a bit at the end by explaining too much and too little and by loving, say, the extended 2001 A Space Odyssey universe too much.

Yeah I kind of agree. I wish the ending was even more vague than it was. I think ending with the, uh, ascension would have been fine. We didn't need that extra bit at the very end. My only other complaint was seeing random things around the space station that you'd have to interact with in the future still pop up on your HUD instead of just being inert. Kind of felt a little game-y in that sense. But apart from that I had very few issues with the game. Really fantastic stuff.

I especially liked how the game made me feel like if I hosed up at all the people around me would absolutely die and my playthrough would be over. I have absolutely no idea if that's the case, but it felt good the whole way through because I managed to never actually fail a puzzle.

Finished Observation last night. I loved the hell out of the narrative itself, including the ending, but I'm 100% on board with the gameplay being a hindrance. Anything involving piloting the sphere made me nauseous on top of frustrated (I was stuck for an embarrassing amount of time in the mainframe after Jim's death because I just couldn't get in between his legs to leave). I'm horrible with directions in general, blasting me out an airlock to find a single hotspot on a giant space station or having me find a specific room in an unmapped arm was bound for failure.

I felt legitimately dizzy and had to lie down after a particular chase. I'm getting old.

Investigation games are often brought up in this thread and while I haven't gotten to it yet Paradise Killer has been getting rave reviews. It's basically described as open world Danganronpa where you're investigating a murder with an ensemble cast of absolute weirdos. The investigation happens in a non-linear fashion with you collecting evidence and questioning suspects and doesn't end until you accuse someone and prove in trial that they did it.

Not a horror game but there's a lot that horror adjacent investigative games could mine from it.
