I mean being an anime girl isn’t different than the other thirsty streamers we have. Both are an ideal you will never ever see in real life

Adult websites have a very hard time staying off the credit card processing blacklists because of the number of chargebacks they face. If OF fought all of these, Visa and Mastercard would drop them like a dime.

It appears to be taking off, I'd never even heard of it before this year, and now it seems to be everywhere. I don't mind the concept, even though I could never see myself spending that much money.

At one point the market's going to be saturated, though. If someone feels like they could do well on OF, it's probably a good idea for them to get started now, before the bubble bursts.

I honestly think the market is bigger than a lot of people think. They are filling the same niche as Japanese-style Maid Cafes but for the US's much more spread out demographics and have already rapidly normalized among younger people

It doesn't stop her. It does stop the credit card company from dumping them. So credit card processing for adult stuff has very high fees. Around 4% for stuff like sites selling sex toys, to porn sites which can hit around 10% per transaction. Part of this is that lots of processing companies won't touch them, and part of it is a really high charge back rate. They likely have a fairly high charge back rate from dudes scamming already. But massive spike in the amount of dollars being charged back is going to be making alarm bells scream. So the processor will give them a choice of a bunch of restrictions or just dropping them. They took the restrictions.

There's already plenty of American ones, but they're aiming for a pretty small demographic of people who want to watch an anime girl stream video games on Youtube, but will not watch the established and massively popular Japanese girls subtitled. I like them but it's really next-level capitalism that the entire streaming persona is owned by the parent company, and at least one of the biggest stars was quietly fired and replaced with multiple other girls who can make more videos for less pay while playing the same character.

I have multiple friends and acquaintances who have started using it. Being good about regular updates, marketing yourself, etc. can make you enough money to help pay off student loans or noticeably improve your quality of life above the basic "I'm working 2 jobs just to afford rent" level. It's a major platform with a lot of money going through it. Thorne hosed it up by joining when she already had such massive exposure that her mere presence would make up a significant percentage of the website's income and then casually engaging in a scam without thinking.

The real issue here is that sex workers don't have much in the way of legal protections or unionisation to prevent them from getting screwed over. People complain about how the new gig economy leaves the employees holding all the risk if the platform changes the pricing. Well guess what, sex workers have been dealing with that poo poo for centuries.

Kizuna Ai's actress apparently managed to do some kind of reverse hostile takeover due to the management company going bankrupt/restructuring and regained some control over the character with the replacement actresses being sent to Siberia/spun off onto separate channels.

Hololive is doing the actual idol industry thing where a streamer got banned for two weeks and had to do a apology video right after her premier for accidentally making a test stream of her live2D model public and because people found out she had a ex-boyfriend.

meanwhile on the other hand Nijisanji will apparently sign up any part-time streamer they think is promising and is far more lax (and apparently their male streamers are more popular than the Hololive ones), VOMS Project apparently gives the streamers full rights to their characters and only provides management help for collaborations and so on, and there are a bunch of more oddball solo or small group streamers just doing whatever interests them. Like there's one I found a while back which was a guy with a very low-poly 3D avatar doing the usual chat stuff but the stream was a camera pointed at a old CRT television.

Hololive is just a series of management blunder after blunder. I mostly feel bad for the actual streamers. And yeah, they heavily underpromote their male vtubers, mostly because of the idol trappings of their management. The girls are about 10x as popular as the guys, but cross-gender collab streams are heavily discouraged so the guys just don't get as much promotion.

It's been a while since I read Idoru, but the plot revolved around a fake AI-generated Japanese idol, and that book was written in the 90s. If anything cyberpunk tried to warn us, we just ignored it until it was too late.
