I have a couple of (half arsed, ill thought out) theories on why the CCP use that phrase in diplomatic circles so much. 1) Professional diplomats are professional people pleasers. Their entire job is based around keeping people happy, and smoothing over spats. So to them, someone whose feelings are hurt is a grave thing, and a situation that must be remedied with appeasements. Which is all the CCP wants. Appeasements. Thus they cry "my feelings are hurt!" and then wait for the army of foreign diplomats to rush over and offer soothing, placating appeasing noises to their tantrum. also 2) Something about "face culture"(tm). Insomuch as that by accusing others of hurting their feelings they are saying "I feel bad, and YOU are the one that made me feel bad. Whether I did a bad thing is beside the point. I feel bad, and it is because of you. Therefore you are the monster here."

I wonder how seriously China is going to restrict Australian imports. Something like 40% of Aussie exports go to China for almost 10% of their GDP.

I think it’s just their catchphrase that they use to justify whatever position or idea they cannot sustain with arguments. Sort of like Israel uses “existential threat”, the US has “spreading democracy”, or the EU and “we decided not to do anything until we reach a consensus”.

it's for internal consumption (maybe not quite as much these days) as in the 90s-00s people in china remembered how hosed over they were by everyone else in the 19th-20th centuries and for a government to aggressively stand up for their sense of dignity made was seen as a good thing. over time it's become a joke, though

I guess it can also be seen as a form of triangulation, on a national scale. CCP does something lovely, other countries respond accordingly, CCP goes "omg look how sad you're making the Chinese people!!" when it's really just the CCP officials who are upset about it and the average Chinese person wouldn't otherwise even know or care about the issue (until the state run media tells them to of course). It's like some rear end in a top hat causing a scene at the grocery store, and when they get politely called out on it, they start screaming about how you're scaring their children.

Chinese diplomats failed to deliver their task really badly.

China vs Australia news: https://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/world/asia/australian-tv-anchor-cheng-lei-detained-in-china-20200831-p55r3j.html They have arrested an Australian TV journalist without charge. Apparently they did so 2 weeks ago, and the Aus govt. knew, but has kept it under wraps, (much like the poor woman rotting in a Beijing jail cell). Given she is a Chinese-born Australian citizen, my guess is they will paint her as a traitor, brainwashed by the evil and oh so powerful Australian secret service to be a spy.

It's a phenomenon that appeared in the Soviet Union too. You, a low-level apparatchik, do not want to make waves by trying language that might raise the ire of someone higher up for not properly spouting the party line, and a surefire way to ensure you don't is to use some canned phrase that has already been vetted by virtue of appearing in some other official document. You also know that loving nobody really cares about the substance of the document or actually wants to read it, so the prose being dry and repetitive doesn't really matter because it serves its purpose: the work is done, and your supervisor is off your back to get it out.

The mayor of Prague has been absolutely fantastic at calling out the PRC and actually backing it up with what actions he can take, such as switching sister cities from the PRC to Taipei so I can believe he'd straight up send a "go gently caress yourself" letter to the Chinese foreign affairs minister
