I mean, I sort of do, you get to an age and start to realise that the cultural ephemera that was the unquestioned background of your young years has vanished a bit at a time, and you can't pinpoint the moment the world you're living in now supplanted it. It's alienating; a part of your interior world, your memory, forever belongs to a place that no longer exists.

But like, it wasn't *better*. And even if it were, for you, personally, are you going to submit people to more hardship just so you can live in it again for one more day? This sounds like I'm deliberately making a heavy handed Brexit analogy and I'm not.

Be thankful you get to leave your surplus things outside and someone does the dirty work of coming and taking them away for you, and try and remember they're human beings and to treat them with respect and not make their job any harder than it needs to be. It's not difficult.

Bins break this country's brains repeatedly, probably because it combines all of our boomer's brain poisoning at once. Unions, Health and Safety, having to be near a poor person, getting really mad that someone didn't do that thing you also didn't do and making up a scenario where that person is hurting a infirm war vet so you can get really really mad.

For a more in depth look I'd suggest a look at the seminal piece on this issue "Trash of The Titans" by Ian Maxtone-Graham.

So I applied to do an MA at Leicester in June, heard nothing, finally managed to find somebody there who can answer a phone and they're like "oh we made a note to give you an offer but we forgot". And I still don't definitely know if I have a place and I'm due to start on Oct. 1st and I'm capping my jorts about it.

1. Anything that is in the world when you’re born is normal and ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the world works.
2. Anything that’s invented between when you’re fifteen and thirty-five is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can probably get a career in it.
3. Anything invented after you’re thirty-five is against the natural order of things.

I'd add to that third one "especially if it's around your home and you don't get a choice in it." Wheelie bins, energy saving lightbulbs, milk storage and delivery format, street lighting, flat screen televisions :wankah:, media formats.

Streaming seems to get a pass, because it's sufficiently close to just watching television, whereas "I don't like these new DVDs, what if you put them in the CD player?" was a thing.

Can confirm that the on the occasions I've been on JSA/UC their tone has completely changed when they see my education history and realise I can go through all the motions of middle class etiquette. They often then were openly rude about other claiments but implied I was somehow not like them. They barely even tried to hide their contempt for what they saw as the 'undeserving' poor.

The whole system seems designed to hurt those who earnestly try to follow the rules, while perhaps more savvy (and yes, usually more middle class!) people who know what the real point of the system is can get out of most of the real work involved with lies and bluster. For example you don't have to actually apply to x number of jobs, you just need to convincingly say you did. None of this is an accident.

There's a term for it I can't remember, but this is a well known thing throughout history. Everyone thinks the past was better than the present. We're not immune to it - and heck from a purely personal perspective, my life is probably better than almost anyone's in history, up to and including nobility from any decade earlier than like... 1900. Socrates posted:

The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. I dunno, I think the Socrates quote is more "kids these days..." which is intergenerational snark. The modern equivalent of that is complaining about smashed avocado snowflakes.

This is more getting misty eyed about smokeless fuels and pining for the coal fires you knew as a girl, back when you could send children up chimneys. And it's not the fires specifically, it's wanting to live forever in the safe bubble of your youth, and being prepared to put other people at risk and increased hardship to get it. And if you ever did get it, it would be everything else, and you'd just keep sacrificing people to try and rebuild the past one brick at a time.

The 'kids these days' thing is also universal, as is the '$new communication method will make people uncommunicative and antisocial unlike in MY day', but I was more getting at the like... veneration of certain historical things. Current society venerates the second world war and the founding of the NHS, (but not the socialism bit), the Nazis venerated the Romans, the Romans venerated the Greeks, etc etc etc

loving U turn it was never a turn at all. It was a vague allusion to going straight on not being as good without an audience to sing along.

Does it count as a U turn if they were going in a direction, never stopped going in that direction, and kept going in that direction?

I saw that as well, and all I could think was "what's 'common sense' about it?" I'm not sure either answer to 'whether or not to have a choir sing a patriotic song in a big venue in London during a pandemic' falls under common sense since it's a rather unusual situation. It's just...whatever the acceptable right-wing version of the dreaded virtue signalling is. They're obsessed with common sense, which just means a combination of 'stuff I agree with' and 'kneejerk emotional response'. So saying that common sense has prevailed because Rule, Britannia! is going to be performed live at The Proms is just dressing it up in populist bullshit to imply it's what all the good, hearty, roast-beef-eating yeomenfolk obviously want, as opposed to the devious, remote elites.

So much of what this government says is peppered with these little phrases and once you notice it it becomes infuriating!

I think once Attenborough finally succumbs to age, I'll probably try in vain to persuade my wife to stop bothering.
