Love the dipper. Crazy dark background there. Agree with leaving the crop as it is on the tit. The photo has really strong movement from the bird's gaze, down to the stick and back up to the bird.

Not the OP, but I just came back from an area in eastern Washington state where California Quail were absurdly abundant. It was pretty common to see single males perched up high like that for long periods of time. I even saw one sitting on a telephone line. My assumption was that they're being lookouts for predators while family groups feed in the brush below.

Thanks! As BoE said, they'll do this sometimes as a lookout. Even turkeys will spend a little time in trees during the day occasionally. Safer, cooler in the summer, and sometimes there's fruit up in the trees to grub on.

After not touching my camera for about 4 years, I made the dumb decision to attempt some bird photography this summer with my aging panasonic gx7 and some ancient, heavy, not-very-sharp minolta MD/MC lenses that I picked up for around $30 each. It's been a real struggle, but here's a few okay handheld shots I've managed with the MD 135mm f2.8:

I need to get better (and less poor) before I can justify upgrading to the G9 and the Leica 100-400 like I want to. autofocus sounds like an incredible feature after using these lenses, though.

I went out on another wildlife drive, this one at Lake Apopka. The north shore of the lake was separated from the rest of the lake by a large levee in the 1940s, reducing the lake from 50,000 to 30,000 acres. This land was all used as farms until the 90s when it was turned back to nature. Now you can drive (or bike or hike) along the old farm roads and see the wildlife.

Shooting birds from your car continues to be annoying but I got a few good shots:

Common Gallinule (Moorhen)

Great Blue Heron

Great Egret

Anhinga

Osprey

Swallow-tailed Kite

What’s the current recommendation for budget telephoto lenses for Nikon bodies? I’ve finally accumulated enough of an Amazon gift card balance from our employee recognition program to make a purchase. I have a D500.

A couple of years ago I’d settled on the Nikon 200-500mm f5.6 over the sigma/tamron 150-600mm lenses, but never felt like dropping the :10bux:. Is there any reason to reconsider?

I've had the tamron 150-600 since it came out, I definitely have gotten my money's worth, and on the used market you could probably get one decently cheap, but would advise that nowadays for mine the autofocus isn't that great/sometimes doesnt work at all for me

Same, and I think it's a known issue with a fix related to the AF switch on the lens. I've been meaning to repair it, tamron makes a fixed switch 'holder' section of plastic for it. It's on youtube.

I'm a Canon guy, but I the options I know about are (with Amazon pricing):
Nikon 200-500mm - OOS
Tamron 150-600mm - OOS
Tamron 150-600mm G2 - OOS
Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary - $889
Tamron 100-400mm - $799
Sigma 100-400mm - $644

I have the Sigma 150-600mm. I like it a lot, but it's heavy. If I was buying today I would be very tempted to save almost half the weight and go with the 100-400mm, which looks sharper anyway.

Well executed, this is nice.

I had one of those surprise close encounters with an owl on a trail this morning. First pic is at 150mm-- at 600 it was just a head shot. I was too worried about spooking it to check how badly I was blowing the highlights.
