I know some people who are heavily into Doctor Who fandom, to the point of organising conventions. They'd frequently get former Doctors and companions making appearances, and using the name of the character they played in promotion. If you book Billie Piper for your con, you're allowed to mention in publicity that she played Rose Tyler. If you book Sylvester McCoy, he's allowed to sell photos of himself in his Seventh Doctor outfit, and even to sign them as "The Doctor".
