That might be an old drop-down/slash china cabinet and now TP & handtowel drawer. They may want to casually lean over to the drop down leaf for inspirational writing whilst on the throne. And posting on the SomethingAwful forums ofc.

They have a lot of knicknacks, okay. So many knicknacks. There's another hutch full of stuff in the foreground of that very picture. Apparently they've decided filling every nook and cranny of the house with infinite display shelves is better than hiding their treasures away in a cupboard.

Besides, sitting on the can is a great opportunity for folks to admire your many knicknacks, so it makes perfect sense to have that poo poo in the bathroom.

I posted a few weeks ago about my living room and got some helpful feedback. Now I'm working on my office. This mock up by Modsy is more or less what I'm going off of. I'm just using my own end tables and not getting the hanging planter. But I was thinking of something a little more exciting for the wall than generic, abstract painting like they recommended (I already got a similar abstract painting for my living room).

Would a mural like this look good at all behind the couch? I feel like I don't see this look often, and my gut is telling me there's a reason for that. I'm definitely open to other designs or suggestions.

why is there a sofa in your office? is it a combined living room and office?

It’s technically a second bedroom, so I’m getting a sleeper sofa for guests.

actionjackson
Jan 12, 2003

are you going to use the sofa yourself to watch tv? the tv seems to be pretty high up on the wall.

otherwise if the sofa is only there for guests, unless you have guests over all the time I would get rid of it, as it's taking up a extremely large % of space relative to how much use it is getting. In either case, the room is severely lacking in color. a colorful rug with perhaps some coordinated pillows for the sofa would be nice. something colorful would work well on the wall, or you could do what i'm doing and have a colorful rug and something b/w above the sofa. I also think having the tv above the computer monitors looks kind of strange, so I would decide if you really need a second tv (I assume you have one in your living room).

in general, the room is wayyyy too gray/neutral. nothing stands out.

The TV is a third computer monitor, and I actually use it way more than I thought I would. Its main purpose isn't to be a TV for the couch. But it has Roku built in, so a guest could watch Netflix, I guess. It's a little higher than I would like. But my living room TV is mounted on the other side of the wall, and the heights need to be slightly different. I have friends from out of state visit a couple of times a year. I thought a sleeper sofa would be a decent compromise of wasting a whole room on a bed and making them book a hotel or sleep in my open living room. I do definitely want to add some color to the room, though. I spend a lot of time in it, and it's bumming me out already.

It's a 6'7x9'4 rug. I got it about a month and a half ago. It's probably past the point of returning, so I'd rather spruce up my wall than spend more money on carpet. I also just did a quick search for rugs and saved the first ones that caught my eye. Turns out I have very boring taste!

You don't see that look often because Americans are deathly afraid of colour, permanent colour (which a mural definitely would be) in particular because it affects "resale value".

The whole point of having neutral is so the color you do use really stands out. So just think of ways to do that. It could be something on the wall, more plants, etc.

you could try a site like minted, or check a local art gallery for pieces above the sofa. I did two coordinated 30x30 bw pieces with some curves to introduce new shapes. I do not have the new rug yet though.

here's the sample of the rug I'll be getting at some point

Ymmv but I really like grayscale. To me it's peaceful and relaxing. The trick is to use varying attractive textures.

If you want to get the mural, go for it, and then reevaluate colors.

I also think the couch is fine. If you're minmaxing, it's true it'll only be used a handful of times per year. But if there's nothing else you'd put in its place otherwise, that's fine.

Completely agree. Most of our decor is very neutral with different textures weaved in. I barely use any color, just the occasional olive green. I find it peaceful and soothing.

that first home is loving dope

btw something I saw on zillow which seemed weird to me as I was randomly looking at listings. this example was a condo in Chicago. There was one small unit in a very nice building and area that was 300K, HOA like 500/month including parking. Then there was another unit in the same building of similar size that was like 150K (wut), but the HOA was 1600/month, and parking was not included. Is this a thing? I've never seen that before. I assume the idea is if someone wants to buy a place but doesn't plan to live there that long that the second option is better, because you would need to leave X years before the first one is cheaper.

Thread, I need some help. I am trying to be an adult, and I'd like to graduate from this kind of storage:

https://www.samsclub.com/p/seville-10-drawer-multi-color-cart/prod7060004

This cart is exactly the right size & drawer configuration that I need. I just need it to not look like a craft room, because it's going in a guest bedroom and won't fit with any of the other furniture. (Currently vaguely mid-century modern and actual mid-century traditional pieces in medium woodtones that I inherited.)

I can't seem to land on the right search terms. I need a chest with many medium-shallow drawers to fit in a small space, with the unit preferably 3-4' tall.

At this point, I don't care what the finish or styling is, though I tend towards lighter woods/simpler styles/white. I'm willing to pay for a nice quality piece, but I can't seem to find one. I just don't want the craft room storage cart look! (Edit: no fabric bins/drawers, either.)
