I've actually done this myself in a way. I was stopped trying to make a left hand turn, foot on the brake. I was rear ended by a guy not paying attention, my foot slipped off the brake and I slammed it down on what I was sure in my mind was the brake. Nope. I hit the gas, cut across two lanes of traffic and arrived more or less safely in the parking lot I was trying to get to, all the while wondering why my brakes failed.

It probably just self selects for a lot of people who are otherwise unemployable at jobs that don't involve climbing up rickety rear end wooden poles and loving around with very high voltage equipment of questionable maintenance standards.
