"the state can and should create money by deficit spending" does nothing transformative to the nature of labor-capital relations or the ownership of value, it's just another mode of capitalism where the state has a slightly different set of policies for how to allow capital to exploit and accumulate wealth. it's mostly capitalism trying to reconcile or hide the absurdity of its requirement for unbounded expansion. i don't buy mitchell's pitch that it's anti-neoliberal because it's anti-austerity (look where actual deficit spending goes), but even if you do anti-neoliberal is a long walk from being anywhere meaningfully left. more importantly his pitch that it's somehow akin to marxism (and non-reifying) because it shows that state budgets are voluntary is bullshit because it's still accepting all of the essential power relations of capitalism. it's like claiming a state-regulated inflation of slave pricing is abolitionist building your whole political and personal identity around mmt as a gospel of political righteousness and then using terms like reification and naming your podcast superstructure is an irony, and speak to being mostly interested in assembling a grab bag ideology from ideas youve happened to encounter that seem esoteric or in academic ascendance despite their inherent incompatibility i don't know what other on ramp to this argument to give you. i dont care about the twitter slapfight because i dont really like braces ~~ironic~~ masculinity thing either, but these people are absolutely hilarious caricatures of ineffectual pseudo left academia. this is the thread for laughing at left-posturing twitter scolds after all
