My experience with one was some kind of Mario (Wario?) tennis game. Spent five minutes playing it and another 15 shuffling around the store nauseous with a sore neck and wondering who would want to pay money for that.

When I worked at software etc we had a virtual boy display unit. For the first week or so people were lining up to play some game that resembled starfox. I remember playing it for 20 minutes or so and getting a bad headache and having my vision tinted red.

I'm guessing Red Alarm. I sought out the Virtual Boy display a few times to play it. The only reason I never wanted it was that I couldn't figure out how you were supposed to have that set up at home.

Oh man, I had a virtual boy. I'll elaborate later when I'm on my desktop, but I actually owned every single game eventually. I sold it fairly cheap but it was still way ahead of itself when it was released. The tech just wasn't ready, and red-only displays were a loving awful decision.

For those of you who want to enjoy the Virtual Boy experience and have an Oculus Rift, there's an emulator that works quite well, at least when I tried it: vbjin-ovr

Having tried a real Virtual Boy a few years ago, trust me, playing the games on a Rift is much, much better.

I never really had any problems with my VB. I at one point was working on a basic Metal Slug ripoff/port and the test code for bad guys flying into camera were neato. Sprite details were tricky with the limited shades.

There's a Quest version on SideQuest as well, I've been playing through VB Wario Land and it's pretty great. Even the Touch controls are a fairly good match for the VB controller. I've been running it in black & white instead of red, easier on the eyes.

The first, hypershitty, prototype DK1? Yes.
DK2, where they actually implemented external tracking is around 6 years old.
The 'modern, proper' Rift is just a bit over 4.5 years old.

I still have my DK1 and through various life situations never got around to using it properly before it was obsolete (almost immediately). But I do get some fun out of my PSVR occasionally.

You'd probably be able to flip yours at a pretty reasonable price, even now.
There just hasn't happened that much to supplant it, considering that the Vive Pro essentially only targets the 'prosumer and business lite' customer segment pricewise.

Extra so since it's base stations and etc are still compatible with newer hardware, so someone interested in say, the valve index, or the knuckle controllers could be interested in picking up your kit on the cheap to get the base stations and controllers or HMD.
(All the Lighthouse v2 equipment is backwards compatible with the original lighthouses. So your Vive kit is compatible with for example the Valve Index or the Knuckles controller.)

The DK1 was obsolete the moment the first unit was assembled, honestly. I'm still surprised it didn't sink Oculus, but I guess at the time they were really just running on hype and mountains of kickstarter money.

Managed to bypass the PCB almost entirely and got the Magic Super Drive working. It required an external PSU anyway, might as well bypass the corroded poo poo and straight through 5VDC.

That TV orb is dope as hell.

I have no idea where else I could ask this. Is there anything I'd need to know special about a NES mini? I know enough about, arrangements. To get the most fROM it. But is there anything special I should know aside from I need another controller for it?
Is it already obsolete tech? I got a refurb from Ninty themselves for $40 because I was using platinum coins for something for once.

poo poo, don't tempt me about projects I can't possibly get to this year.

You can get clear acrylic or polycarbonate globes of the right size. Get creative with masking tape, paint, and a Dremel, and you have yourself a knockoff Videosphere ready to receive whatever display will fit. Tack on some greebles to complete the look, since all you'll need is an HDMI port on the back.

I think a decent one could be put together for... <$250? And a whole bunch of hours :negative:

I mean, you could get a (PI, GAMEr Laptop) but it's designed to be a portable emulator box for 8/16 bit games and does it well. Hell you can get away with PSX era stuff, too.

Drawbacks? The cables are too short and you probably won't use it as much as you think. But it's good stuff and it's killed any real driving need to be a CoLlEcToR, aside from really niche stuff I owned and played like Lunar PSX or Gunstar Heroes.

All of this reminds me that I have a spare Commodore 1702 monitor for cannibalization that I've always wanted to put an LCD screen in to make it easier to use in situations that require HDMI, because using adapters to downgrade HDMI to RCA video absolutely sucks, but the bezel around the crt is curved and I can't think of a way to make that work with a flat LCD monitor panel. Now I'm sad again.

I've heard the cables are short, yeah. I plan to get at least one 8bitdo controller for exactly that reason. Plus more comfortable than the good old brick. I just liked the form factor tbh, and the software UI side of it. A buddy of mine has some PSX roms on his if memory serves.

please do not destroy God's own chosen babby CRT :smith:

For those monitors specifically, don't use HDMI to composite, use HDMI to s-video and get you a s-video to chroma/luma cable and hook it up that way. Looked real drat good when I used to run my retropie off of one back in the day.
