Yes, the study predicted that there'd need to be a second lockdown in September to prevent cases exceeding critical care capacity in October.

Instead, we're *check notes* blaming 20-29 year olds for eating out to help out and banning S Club 7, because the people have protested against a second wave.

Here's something I love about being a manager. There are two girls working in my office. They loving gossip non stop and do no work when I'm out of the office.

Usually I go out for an hour at 12,30 or 1ish for lunch and I know they just do gently caress all while I'm gone even though they take their lunches at 12.

Today I'm hanging around in the office and skipping my lunch. They keep casually mentioning the time in conversation as if to remind me it's time for me to leave so they can skive off for an hour.

I'm skipping lunch just to gently caress them off lol

They must really love you, Don't do this.

Also you can absolutely be a manager and not an arse, maybe it's uncommon for sure but I like to think I'm managing it if for nothing else I know what managers can be like and I never want to be come That Person.

I find the lack of outrage over deaths to be very strange. There was more hoo-ha about the horse meat scandal or Jade Goody than thousands and thousands of people dying and all the lives affected by that. I know thousands of people dying is hard to comprehend, yet people are just itching to eat a £3 meal deal and have a pint at spoons than think how our actions each affect one another and the repetitive gently caress-ups by the government.

This year has really changed how I see the country, I'm still not sure how it sits with me. I used to be optimistic and have faith in individuals, now, less so.

A big problem is that the people who are really outraged aren't going to be taking to the streets to call it out, because there's a pandemic on.

Also there's a bunch of people outraged that the government is doing anything at all, which is more dispiriting.

OwlFancier
Aug 22, 2013

There's also a bunch of people who are completely insulated from basically everything demanding that everyone else endanger themselves so that they don't have to feel like the world isn't exactly the way they want it to be.

Also, what's the thing with the small thing tragedy, big thing statistic? That thing.

Jady Goody was one person, with a face. The people dying of Covid are faceless statistics.

And horse meat is gross, or if you're French, mislabeled. Theoretical gross trumps faceless death as well.

I think in this case it's more an active/passive thing.

Famously on this day 19 years ago a few thousand people died, nobody remembers every single one of their names, but everyone remembers the name of the one Bad Foreign who was funded by Ronald Reagan plotted it, and people were pretty motivated by it.

Whereas the Covid deaths are due to the government not doing anything, rather than doing something, and there's no single Big Bad to blame other than ideologies like neoliberalism.

I have come to believe that the people posting poorly spelled things all over aren’t illiterate, they are drunk and *emotional*.

The strong emotion prompts them to post racist screeds and the alcohol prompts them to misspell them. My dad got like this toward the end of his life and it was heartbreaking to see.

Sorry, I meant functionally illiterate as in "unable to parse and comprehend information, lacking critical thinking skills", not "unable to read or spell". I can see why that's doubly unclear as immediately before I was joking about spelling.

I probably used the wrong term ... Maybe I'm illiterate 👀

My personal observation is every year I go back to 2008's The Dark Knight and I always find a quote that fits to the time.
I think this one is apt.

quote:

The Joker:
You know what I've noticed? Nobody panics when things go "according to plan." Even if the plan is horrifying! If, tomorrow, I tell the press that, like, a gang banger will get shot, or a truckload of soldiers will be blown up, nobody panics, because it's all "part of the plan". But when I say that one little old mayor will die, well then everyone loses their minds!

It's way more about a million is a statistic, I think, as well as even though it's a MASSIVE death toll, relative tot he population, the numbers are quite low, so there's a decent chance that most people simply don't know anyone who died, let alone anyone who died way younger than they would have, and so it's not real for them. Big numbers are hard to comprehend at the best of times.
