I've seen shit you people wouldn't believe. Cop cars on fire off the shoulder of I-94. I watched search lights glitter in the dark near the Ambassador Bridge. All those moments will be lost in time, like piss in the drain. Time to retch.
Some of favorite Goth stuff is only technically Goth adjacent. I love finding lowkey Goth hits in the catalog of other bands like

"Real Goth" only consists of the european Post-Punk scene and the late 80's new wave scene. What is known by "American Goth" is nothing but Alternative Rock with questionable real goth influence. When people try to argue that artists like Wicca Phase Springs Eternal are not real goth, while saying that Marilyn Manson is, I can't help not to cringe because they are just as fake goth as Wicca Phase Springs Eternal (plus the pretentiousness). Real Goth sounds ENERGETIC, POWERFUL and somewhat HATEFUL. Fake goth is weak, self pity and a failed attempt to direct energy and emotion into music. Some examples of REAL GOTH are Joy Division, Bauhaus, Christian Death (the only real goth band from the american scene) and The Cure. Some examples of FAKE GOTH are Marilyn Manson, Soundgarden and Faith No More GOTH BELONGS TO POST-PUNK NOT TO INDIE, POP PUNK, ALT ROCK OR ANY OTHER MAINSTREAM GENRE

the cure is definatly known for being energetic powerful and hateful. totally no emotion or self pity put into it.

manson is definatly all emotion and self pity no energy or hate in him at all.

i also noticed you completly side stepped industrial which is where american goth actually sprang out of.

Someone mentioned gothic metal earlier, which was/is totally my kind of stuff since I discovered it back as a teenager. This thread is making me wish my wardrobe was darker again and reminded me I wanted to dye my hair black way back. Anyway, have some more gothic music of varying degrees of gothic:
(I wish more people would label their links)

Tristania - Beyond The Veil

The Sins of Thy Beloved - Forever

Sirenia - Meridian

Lacuna Coil - Soul Into Hades

Paradise Lost - Gothic

Tiamat - Vote For Love
Not sure if that one counts but I don't care and a gaggle of goths is a peaceful sight who do anything to avoid a fight so I think I'm safe.

The 69 Eyes - Gothic Girl

Welp, enough nostalgia for the time being. Already had a trip down memory lane from reading and listening to this thread just now.

Oh are we sharing pictures of our younger goth selves? This was roughly 15 years ago. The picture of the wall was by my ex who got me into London After Midnight and such, and who I then got into more classic goth stuff. It's a yellow goth because he liked yellow a lot, plus lyrics from Alien Sex Fiend's "Another Planet", and I'm sad to say I've long since lost the drawing.

Also when I was going to see Bauhaus in 2006 these guys came up to me on the train station and said "hey, we're much better than Bauhaus, buy our record" so I did.

loving cloves were somehow always my gateway back to smoking after managing to quit for a few months. I’d decide it was ok to buy a pack of cloves and smoke like one a day, get re-hooked on nicotine, then go back to regular smokes because they didn’t hurt my throat as much. :hb:

They were so much more expensive, but it took me like 20 minutes to smoke a single one, so it kind of balanced out?

I only smoke cannabis now but sometimes put herbs in my Pax like camomile and lavender. I should add some cloves for a nostalgia hit!

I remember being confused because punk metal goth and other youth culture styles didn’t necessarily get along well and seeing kids mix them it was like, no you should be fighting each other or at least avoiding, what is happening, pick a counter culture lol

I know people have been touting the death of monoculture for a while, but all the younger people I work with sure seem to all dress alike and listen to the same music. It just seems like the connectivity of the internet has basically just flattened everything out like a wood plane.

I have actually been giving some serious contemplation to what gets/keeps people into subcultures, and I think I am ready to say that if I had actually ever been able to get a date in my teenage years I may well have actually ended up being into something beyond whatever subculture "gregarious loner who thinks about IRC, synthpop, and RPGs all day" was. The best part was that I had a few awesome goth lady friends who seemed exclusively interested in dating the least- or most-goth guys they could find; clearly goth-curious was not really the right lane to pick.

Also while nothing has ever come close to tempting me to start smoking, I definitely never complained when somebody blazed up some cloves in my general vicinity. That is probably how I got into live-action Vampire: the Masquerade in the first place

I feel like I should put in my twopenneth..

I first went to a Goth club on my 18th birthday - that was the Slimelight in London (Which afaik is still going, although it was never the same after they opened a 3rd dance floor and stopped you bringing your own drink).
That was a week after seeing Siouxsie and the Banshees live at the Town and Country in Camden....

Two years later I was DJ'ing at the club.
If you're not familiar with it, the Slimes was an amazing place in the 90s - it was in a warehouse that doubled as a paintball venue during the week (Electrowerkz), and had a unique run down post-industrial feel. It opened at 11pm and chucked out at 7am - so you could get the tube/train home !
The other thing was they didn't have an alcohol license, so it was bring your own (Which left more money for "stimulants").

There was so much music that you'd only hear there - and pre-internet, it was nigh on impossible to find stuff - I got incredibly lucky with 2nd hand and charity shops and picked up so much rare music for next to nothing (12" of the Bolshoi "Away" for 50p, The March Violets album for £3 and so on) so when one of the DJs said he was quiting and I should put a mixtape in, I had the collection to do it !

At the same time, a guy started putting Goth gigs on, on the Sunday at the Underworld (as Nemesis Promotions), and I lucked into DJing and doing the lighting for those - I think I got an average of 10 free promo CDs a month from bands - I always felt obliged to play them a couple of times, even when they where awful.

Anyway - two you've probly not heard, and one you really should have - all dance floor fillers.

Top Class!
I was too young to be a proper goth, but definitely had a rivethead phase on my way to settling into an alternative rock/indie adult. The vestiges are still there, I wear a lot of boots and black, but not enough to get me beaten up in a Wetherspoons. I'll definitely listen to some Cold Cave, Zola Jesus, Drab Marble, Boy Harsher and Black Marble regularly and if I have a couple of glasses of wine, the Front 242, Perturbator, Killing Joke and Ministry come out.

I never played that well with the local goths, they tended more towards the black roses and lace side of things and I idolised giant video screens, gasmasks and abandoned factories more which really didnt take with the art-school girls with cupboards full of purple candles. Also probably because I was a massive nihilistic nerd.

A good friend of mine is an older, first-wave goth and he was quite the looker back in the day. His 80s photos amusingly frequently shows up in random articles about goth culture.
