It's just that everything now seems predicated on an efficient testing regime, and if a spike of as little as 3k cases per day has caused the entire system to poo poo the bed, I would say that an efficient testing regime is not something we have.

It should be remembered that kids get random fevers all the time. It's just now any fever has to be treated like Covid, while 90% of it will just be random bugs. People are realizing there are no testing centers - one of my colleges kids has a persistent cough, and has been looking for a testing center since 8 am this morning. All I know is my kid has had five days of school in two weeks and is a much nicer person to be around, so I'm willing to take the chance on Covid to be honest. The pubs should never have been opened, and that's where the real spread is going on. The schools haven't been open long enough for anyone to show symptoms they caught there, all this rise is from the pubs!

I can see you have never been stuck in a house with a four year old for five months. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a "it's just the flu bro" - I work in medical research, I know the risks, and how badly this has been managed - but with things how they are you just have to weigh the risks against the rewards, he's young and healthy, so the chances of him getting it are low, and at that age the chance of him spreading it are just as low. and without some outside stimulus, he's going to start developing some long lasting mental/behavioral problems. So I'm happy with him being my only high risk point of contact. (I've worn P1 and P2 masks all day, every day at work for 18 years now, and we're all trained to limit contact spread, so work is actually the safest place to be)

This goes back to my point about the point about the pubs - we're seeing a spread amoungst younger, healthier people - so deaths won't spike from it. The worry is as the number of cases rises, the chances of them meeting dear old granny and giving it to her increases. so yeah, we will probably see a break point in the graph where this happens, but for now, its the "best" kind of spread if you want the dreaded heard immunity - the people getting it are the ones who can resist it better.

It might also measure the actual rise in cases as you say. But also as you say there are other explanations for that. For all we know we're measuring the 97 diff tory cousins running the service eventually getting their poo poo together but the actual infection is rising in a manner completely unreflected other than glimpses here or there when the tests a) are available b) make it to the lab intact c) aren't wrong anyway cause they were bought cheap. I just feel we're not quite flying blind but flying with one eye taped shut and the other looking through a kaleidoscope

I honestly couldn't give a gently caress if they exempt hunting and shooting. They're outside, usually well distanced anyway, and affect maybe like 0.1% of the population, who were all probably ignoring the restrictions anyway and don't interact much with normies. It's a waste of their time to bother, but in the grand scheme of up that the tories have managed to gently caress in this, this is NOTHING and I'd honestly prefer them wasting a day on this than, say, chucking a hundred million to their mates to 'buy PPE' or whatever.

So what are we thinking for the vote on the amendment - there are talks of "dozens" of rebels and some abstainers. But with an 80 majority you'd need over 40 rebels to carry the day.

As of about midday today there were approximately zero coivid tests available across the UK, largely because of a shortage of reagents, kits and PCR capacity. A good portion of tests that are coming back are being shipped to Germany and Ireland. Hospitals are mostly okay but the pillar 2 testing is not.
