Only comment I'm making on this is the captions in the video were, I guess, autogenerated and gets Uyghurs as weavers and then wiggers.

And I'm really glad it did.

Every single thing about this Mulan movie is either stupid, bad or strange or all three at the same time.

Manohla Dargis of the NYT, one of two resident film critics there (A.O. Scott being the other) who both routinely write scathing reviews about every single great movie, loving LOVES this movie.

You can "buy" it on Disney+, but then you "own" it only on that service.

The main actress loves the HK police.

Disney had to make this in the Uyghur region. From a strictly logical standpoint, if you collaborate with the Nazis, it doesn't matter if you do it in Berlin or Auschwitz, but it's still a bad look.

They also had boatloads of Chinese people working on the film either directly or as consultants and nobody told them that Mulan, from northern China, couldn't possibly live in a Tulou.

I really wonder why they did that. It seems like a weird hill to die on. "No, actually genocide is good and justified. We, Disney, totally stand for it!"

Could have just made a movie anywhere in China without any connection to that sort of business and made money from both sides.

Would it be crediting the Chinese government too much if it was suggested that they ensured Disney filmed at that location so later on they could say "There can't possibly be any genocide happening - look the American company Disney filmed out there and they saw nothing!"

given that chapek started as ceo in february of this year and mulan filmed from august to november 2018 i'm not really sure if this can all be pinned on him

Yeah I don’t get why people are dragging the actress over her supposed support of the Hk cops. Like okay maybe it really IS her opinion but it’s more likely that she simply doesn’t want her career to go up in flames or to suddenly vanish off the face of the earth.

Nobody asked her opinion on the protests, she could have just not said anything regardless of her beliefs.

Leaning on anyone you can to parrot the party line is a time honored tradition in China that goes back 50 years. Even Chinese folks living in America with a green card or dual citizenship don't want to say bad things about China, because the officials can and will be impossibly petty to you about it if you or your family ever interacts with the state in any capacity.

Like, your nephew went to Shenzen for a job interview and was detained for 2 weeks and fined 20,000 yuan for 'anti-government statements' tier petty.

If I remember rightly, she was explicitly asked about the protests in an interview because she is a prominent Chinese actress.

And, as stated above, because she is a prominent Chinese actress who wishes to remain a prominent Chinese actress, she gave a "what the CCP is doing is cool and good." style answer before moving on.

Doesn't make it right, but it does explain it.

Yeah. There is a recently documented case of an exchange student at University of Queensland who was photographed in the background of a Free Hong Kong protest in Brisbane, who got a phone call from his parents saying they had been visited by a Party Official who leaned on them by telling them that their son should "think about his families safety before doing anything."

The CCP is petty, vindictive, and not above threatening family members. Hell they threatened the family of the whistleblower doctor in Wuhan as a matter of standard protocol.

I thought she just tweeted it, unsolicited. From wikipedia:

quote:

In August 2019, Liu reshared an image posted by Chinese newspaper People's Daily, an official newspaper of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party.[49] The image included a quote from Chinese reporter Fu Guohao who worked for People's Daily-owned tabloid Global Times and was subsequently assaulted by protesters during the 2019–20 Hong Kong protests: "I support Hong Kong police. You can beat me now. What a shame for Hong Kong."

They absolutely didn't need to go there or anywhere in China to film it. Disney 110% went there because they got tax breaks/cash/unlimited extras.

There are places where you can hire so many extras that you can form a literal division that is cheaper than CGI. Armour and sets included. When they film 3 kingdoms # 8975 don't be surprised if #8974 was filmed on the same set with the same extras with #8976 filming concurrently.

It's not a synonym but it's certainly used like one by 99% of people who decide to use it.
From the cambridge dictionary
"niggardly
adjective disapproving
UK /ˈnɪɡ.əd.li/ US /ˈnɪɡ.ɚd.li/

slight in amount, quality, or effort:"

Edit: to be clear I agree it probably doesn't need to be used.
