Carth Dookie posted:Would you like a lightly used Yamaha FG820 or Epiphone Les Paul Custom? I'll give ya $10 for the Les Paul On similarly lovely news from 2020 I got a message that a close family friend of my grandfather's (the one who passed late 2018) just passed away unexpectedly and his wife is not far off by the sounds as well. I've known this bloke my entire life and because of this lovely poo poo I can't even go up for the funeral because it'll turn into a 5 week trip with hotel isolation at each end I don't really have $6k laying about that I'd like to spend on an incredibly boring isolated holiday either

Got the thing in my hands and it was ok. Not badly priced for an American made solid wood mahogany acoustic either but I couldn't help thinking how different it was to the 324e I had tried a week ago when I got talked into buying my Tele. That's kinda odd but sweet at the same time I really like the idea of using casts of body parts or purpose-built medical tools for making art with. You end up with something that tells a unique story and can serve a new function after it has served its initial purpose. There's something about that I find really lovely. ETA, I also find the idea of the object showing up decades later in one of those "weird poo poo I found in the op shop" Facebook groups and people arguing over what it's supposed to be really amusing

Kind of confused about it since I've been trying to find a spec sheet for it and had no luck so far. A dump from the Epiphone website from late 2011 shows this model but lists it as having a rosewood fretboard, but I'm reasonably certain it's actually ebony which makes it a little mysterious. Humbuckers can be split to singles. The actual pickup coils I'm uncertain of because of the aforementioned lack of spec sheet and I don't want to try to unstring and take the guard off to find out just yet. If the archive is to be be believed then they're alnico classic humbuckers. link to archive here

This is not far off my old Les Paul at all but mine was about 2005 from memory. And it was a studio fixed neck Grinder motor arrived last night with the belts with the guy from Gameco who graciously offered me use of his heat treating oven (I believe it's a Paragon which are v well made and run upward of 3k for an entry level model).

Like, what the gently caress is this. Yamaha, Squier and Fender are all confirmed rosewood. Taylor is ebony and I could probably point out the Cameroonian forest it came out of on goggle maps. The Epiphone archive says it's rosewood but looks loving nothing like the rosewood example on the archive dump or any rosewood fretboard Les Paul Ebony I've ever seen.

I would blow Dane Cook posted:what are people's plans for christmas now that covid has hosed travel? Stock up on whatever non-perishable essentials I'll need months in advance, so I won't have to deal with the inevitable panic buying that'll begin early December. We did Xmas in Bali last year and it was amazing. Usually we just stay at home since I have a small family who are mostly within an hours drive, so I guess it'll be lunch at our place with them as usual.

How things go with covid will inform how many people and who can come out but I'm pretty sure we are hosting Christmas again this year. It was completely hosed and stressful as hell but it was also pretty cool getting wasted on punch, passing out and making enchiladas for a 5pm Christmas lunch

well why not posted:Do you have a ballpark what would I do with a ballpark? McSpergin posted:Channeling my inner boostcruising offer calculator Tempting, but no. Somewhat more serious answer after a bit of googling of old and new: a bit of googling of it has me a little confused. The closest I could find new (as in a les paul custom ebony) is around $1450 with no case: https://derringers.com.au/epiphone-les-paul-custom-ebony-8500446-electric-guitar cheaper variants: https://derringers.com.au/epiphone-les-paul-classic-ebony-electric-guitar-2020 with cheaper materials, fingerboard, pickups etc is about $960, again no case. Case for it costs about $260 all by itself: https://derringers.com.au/epiphone-les-paul-hard-case-940enlpcs but yeah thats all new stuff obviously. Mine almost certainly doesn't have the probuckers or the newest grover tuners on it like the $1400 example, but its not like mine is bad or super outdated or anything. reverb has some for comparison of 201~ era: https://reverb.com/item/35374221-epiphone-les-paul-custom-pro-2010s-alpine-white $700ish for a white one with no case from Italy. $900ish with an aftermarket case but I have no idea what condition its really in or what the specs are: https://reverb.com/item/35726007-epiphone-les-paul-custom-pro-electric-guitar all the way up to this which looks pretty close in terms of actual features but is newer: https://reverb.com/item/35584430-epiphone-les-paul-custom-pro-2017-black for $1150 with a soft case. so IDK $800-$900? A lot depends on how much it costs to post. and I'm in SA, I expect shipping will NOT be kind because its a big and heavy bastard. I've had a quick look on auspost but not yet found an answer. Maybe I'm doing myself a disservice here, but I did a quick google on gumtree and this looks bloody similar in NSW so if you're there this guy is offering what looks to be the same guitar and with a stand for $685 and could probably be talked into giving up the hard case he says he has as well: https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/west-pennant-hills/guitars-amps/epiphone-les-paul-custom-black-and-gold/1256577437 From the photos alone I'd say mine is in better nick (less tarnished at least because it spent most of its time in its case).

If I can't cross the border up north over Xmas I'm probably gonna go paint my brains on Gladys's front door for not being more serious about lockdowns tbh. I normally see family a few times a year and I haven't seen anyone since the wedding in March. For reals tho probably just do loving nothing, post any pressies up to my aunt's place for people I also miss my sister's dogs a lot and want to pat the hell out of them

I would blow Dane Cook posted:what are people's plans for christmas now that covid has hosed travel? Probably a quiet Christmas at my place with a couple of my kids. Usually my son and his wife go up the Central Coast for Christmas and NY, but I don't know whether they will do that this year as the brother in the family lives in Melbourne so him and his girlfriend mightn't be able to come back to NSW over Christmas. I'm definitely going to start buying stuff for Christmas next month, though. I did that last year and it made things a lot less stressful when all hell broke loose during the last couple of weeks before Christmas. Now idea what I'm going to get people for presents. Last year I got people tickets to places and events and that didn't turn out so well.
