Earlier this year I was walking to the post office and walked passed a lady being swooped, I walked Infront and made myself big to get it's attention while she buggered off The bird proceeded to follow me easily 70 metres up the road while swooping, where upon I had to pick up a stick to defend myself from a large bird because he clearly had it out for me. This encounter ended on one of the main roads of my city with peak hour traffic backed up so countless people would have seen this whole thing happen I felt like a dumb caveman Growing up I was regularly swooped on the way to school and it has killed a couple people either directly, by getting their spine. Or indirectly by blustering people into traffic There are atleast 3 community signs in my neighbourhood warning of magpies ,crows and other swooping birds Thanks for listening to my swooping is real ted talk

The magpies don't swoop if they know you and you're friendly.

Tip for Americans: if you ever visit Australia and see a magpie, you must bow to them. Full 90 degree bend at the hips, like samurai. This shows proper respect to the magpie and ensures you will not be swooped

But occasionally you're just opening yourself up to a lethal blow to the back of the neck. It's a gamble but you gotta do it.

Do not bow to the cassowary though. I would say run from the cassowary but it won't help you. If you're a tourist and you encounter a pissed off cassowary you're already a gonner.
