Basically the same system in 3.5 except their attacks maxed out at 1d2-4 damage which means they only ever hit for 1 and player characters tended to have slightly higher HP since you added your Constitution modifier to your hit dice.

Still because they were tiny they were hard to hit and way more accurate than the medium sized humanoids so they had a pretty good shot of outright murdering you.
And you started with a max roll on your first level hit die, unlike in AD&D.

Wizards were still in danger, especially if they couldn't use any spells on it.

Yeah, it was a common joke about 3e, but it was actually worse in earlier editions, where (especially if you were just doing 3d6 down the line stats) it was totally possible your starting character might have 1hp, and unless you use variant rules, you die at 0.

It's not that kind of test.
Not surprisingly, the Fraction/Zdarsky story in Detective Comics #1027 has some pretty funny moments.

The Batman's Grave #10 continues the saga of wacky Alfred, I don't even know what Batman is doing at this point, but here's Alfred dealing with a home invasion.

While I understand Bruce's reluctance to have police near the batcave, is there actually any reason why 'My butler discovered an intruder, and shot him with non-lethal ammunition' would get them in trouble?

I presume having to explain why a burglar who is apparently good enough to get past Batman's security was robbing the house.

Well either Gotham police are able to keep him locked up meaning the robber isn't that good at infiltration/exfiltration or he escapes. Either case problem solved.

Bruce Wayne is well known for being loaded. He's also (supposed to be) known for being a dumb rear end in a top hat playboy who lives alone in his giant (and old, which I'd presume would make it easier to break in to, but I'm no burglar) house with one other old man. Naturally I assume this dude has more to do with the Batman story because... well, that's how comics go, but I'd imagine there are plenty of potential robbers that have at least thought about breaking in while Bruce is at some charity ball or whatever assuming the security isn't that great.

My only guess is that he'd have to cook up a story as to why he wasn't there (then practice syncing up his excuse with whatever Alfred will feed the cops), but yeah, I don't get it either.

Non-lethal or not, that was a lot of shots.

My dream Batman project is a Lupin III crossover where he robs Wayne Manor blind, finds the Batcave, steals the Batmobile, and yet somehow manages to never put 2 + 2 together.
