luxury handset posted:there wasn't really a way to professionally help pedophiles in historic eras either. like in the dodgy bloke anecdote, i dont know if people so much as turned a blind eye as maintained a socially known boundary with the dude without hounding him out of the community. a difference between hesitant acceptance versus neglectful approval All else aside, what shook me about that story was that clearly, the community was not maintaining boundaries despite knowing what was up, since the local kids would hang out at his house because he had a sick trainset and gave them biscuits, and their parents didn't make a fuss. The attitude as relayed to me by my dad was kinda well, you know what he is so don't be alone with him, which shifts the blame for anything that does happen onto the unlucky kid. Except my dad apparently did spend time alone with him sometimes (when he told me this he spent a lot more time talking about how cool the trainset was than the nonce, which, priorities!) he just always made sure he had a knife, which, again, what the hell. We're talking 11-13 year olds, roughly, for context, I think my dad was probably 12-13 at the time, so mid-late '50s England. Very much of the era where you just threw your kids out the house in the morning and they came back when it was dark, from a really, really young age. Just completely bizarre from a modern perspective.

I'm actually kind of pro free-range kids to an extent, because despite my incredulity at just how young people used to let their kids go out, I was also allowed to roam free from the age of about 9, but in a much more limited way. I could go to the park or the shops and never on my own, only with at least two other kids, until I was about 12 and started getting the bus home by myself, and I'm only 33. I think you've got a point about the kid gangs though: I never really thought about it before but I'm guessing that had a lot to do with it. Our parents knew we weren't actually alone, and we mostly concerned ourselves with clashing other kid gangs over swing rights and poo poo. I don't know how common that is still in my area, but I do see the odd roving group of children so I guess it still is a thing. There's no way on god's green earth though that any of our parents would have been ok with us going to an unrelated adults house, or hanging out with an adult they hadn't met, let alone someone they thought was a nonce. That's the part that blows my mind. 100% on the boomer survivorship bias though. They just don't think about all the bad poo poo that actually did happen, so long as they got through it ok.

Chemical castration seems to be a go to for those institutions too. I forget the name, but I watched a documentary about it. Wish I could remember the name. Might have been by Theroux. I'll look when I get home.

Please note that "chemical castration" is a fancy term for "inject neurotoxins into social undesirables to torture them to death" All the various formulations of the cocktails designed in the 20s and 30s were tailored to inflict as much suffering and degenerative damage as possible, and 4 in 5 people who have been chemically castrated commit suicide to escape the agony. Among nations that still use chemical castration, almost all of them use the original chemical formulas. Also a lot of child molesters are opportunistic offenders - they aren't attracted to children, they enjoy using their power to sexually abuse those weaker than them. Screening for pedophiles doesn't catch predators like that.

Maybe we could just have "Child Island" where all of the world's children are raised. No adults at all allowed on the island. Once you turn 18 you're shipped out of the island to your job as a warehouse worker for Amazon. There you'll work until you're 20 and can be trusted to explore the job market and live on your own. It'll solve all of our problems! Why hasn't anyone thought of this before?

StillFullyTerrible posted:i actually unstarred this thread but i felt i owed a response to fatty crabcakes before i left However quote:Castration can be scientifically defined as extirpation or suppression of testicular function, and can be classified as surgical or chemical (Neto et al., 2014). Setting aside human applications, surgical castration (also known as orchidectomy, ORX) has been frequently performed to avoid uncontrolled breeding of domestic and/or companion animals and to elucidate the androgen-related issues in biomedical researches. Although the ORX method guarantees the perfect sterilization and sufficient testosterone (T) deprivation, it also has several disadvantages such as requirement of anesthesia, unwanted bleeding and infections (Jana & Samanta, 2006). Therefore substantial number of studies has been conducted to develop chemical castration method for a better alternative to the surgical procedure. It should be noted that this approach, to the extent that it does at all, really only works with men. Despite having less testosterone than the average cis woman, my erections are exactly as underwhelming as they were before Ellie Crabcakes has a new favorite as of 18:55 on Sep 5, 2020 |

Tomorrow is Labour Day, so let's talk about a real piece of work, "psychic" Sylvia Browne: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J91qNpR5F7A There are a few details I left out because they were pretty disturbing, with respect to her predictions of missing children specifically. I covered the big famous one though because that's probably the most notable story of today's antagonist.

On the Oh No Ross and Carrie podcast, it's interesting when all of the sudden a seemingly true believer busts out balance testing stuff. That's the trick where they discreetly pull your arm to the side to throw you off balance, then tell you to use their bracelet/magical thinking/crystal and pull straight to trick you into thinking that their thing made you more balanced and clear. There's no way to do it without explicitly knowing that it's a con, so it's a weird moment when you suddenly know that the person is an intentional scammer. Or I guess the flip side where James Randi was once talking to a young psychic about her method. She proceeds to tell him that she reads people's minds and auras, and by that, she means that she reads their face and can tell hidden truths by watching their reactions to her general probing questions. He stood there for a moment shocked that she was doing cold reading without seeming to realize it, or that she wasn't supposed to admit it. My grandma joined Syliva Browne's church when I was about 10 and became a priest/deacon in it. It was weird but in a more new-agey way where there was a lot of meditation and prayerful "laying hands" to help cure illness or for other reasons. I stopped going regularly when I was in high school since I was very clear that I thought it was all dumb and bullshit. I have a lot of mixed feelings in that I def thought it was dumb but she's made a lot of friends who have come through for her in there. I also have a cook book produced by them somewhere in my stuff. I should drag it oit.

I've definitely met people just out and about, not doing it professionally, who are convinced they're some level of psychic and on investigation it turns out that they're just reading body language and asking leading questions - and not in a deliberate, deceptive way, but in that they actually think the ability to feel physical empathy and read non-verbal communication is an extra-normal ability, sometimes because they don't even consciously realise that's what they're doing. I mean, I'm autistic so it might as well be lmfao but it's weird seeing people not realise that's just a baked in human communication thing.

A lot of people don't really tend to realize they broadcast information non-verbally like that.
