Bonzo posted:You are going to be really pissed or really satisfied as you dive in I don't know much about country at all. It was a genre I kind of avoided because I was close-minded, and am just kinda digging into it because of stuff like Todd Snider and John Prine. Find myself really digging Steve Earle, Jerry Jeff Walker and Billy Joe Shaver I went through a Sturgill playlist last night and loved it. Now I am getting baked as I dig into Metamodern Sounds in Country Music and I loving love it.

As someone who shares a very similar heritage to him, and has always felt a really strong kinship to the Kentucky guys now gaining ascendency, I’m about to cry over here. Powerful, amazing stuff. Thanks for sharing.

XBenedict posted:I like sailors guide. I didn’t like sound and fury at all. It drat sure wasn't what I expected at all, but I have to say being on edibles really helped. It's not country. I don't know what the hell genre to call it. I am gonna go ahead and finish out his discography tonight. I think I'll be in this thread quite a bit asking for recommendations. That John Prine live album with the electric band (September 78?) was exquisite. Someone mentioned that a few pages back.

I respect Sound for the balls it took to create, and I love how trollish he’s been in general just because it’s a shtick he wears well. But I fuckin’ hate that album.

It took me two full listens to appreciate Sound & Fury. I enjoyed everything else he'd done as country music, but Sound & Fury is just somethin else. Make Art Not Friends is just so drat enjoyable. Plus I love the thematic elements in the "movie".

They kind of skipped over 90s country in their analysis but I was listening to some the other day and even back then there was a strong narrative undercurrent of poverty, provincialism, the man keeping you down etc. Way different from the ooo-rah authoritarian tack that pop country took following 9/11 and Save a Horse Ride a Cowboy poo poo.

Nashville country being conservative is nothing new. All you have to do is actually read the lyrics. I think maybe it's also partially due to the fact that country music is structurally simple. There were obviously some exceptions, notably Loretta Lynn's "The Pill". I guess that's the reason that I've always leaned hard into outlaw country and alt-country. gently caress that "God, guns, and family" nonsense. (Note: I do make exceptions for the early work of Gram Parsons. There were a lot of covers of older songs with those themes, "I am a Pilgrim", "The Angels Rejoiced", and "The Christian Life", etc)

Like you said, I don't think I'm the target audience since I was already aware of all this but I also question who is. It seems like their audience would already agree even without knowing details and someone who didn't would nope out pretty fast at the tone and pov. So, sort of a waste :\ I did think it was funny how I'd not heard all their song samples but was super familiar with all the "dissenting artists they rattled off". Also yet more props to Johnny Cash for playing a protest song for Nixon at the white house.
