I took the octopath less travelered,

And it made one-eighth the difference.
It took me 75ish stars to get used to 64DS’s controls but once I finally did it wasn’t too shabby.

Minigames are alright, too.

Look on the bright side.

Mario 64DS has some cool things but playing as the non-Mario characters honestly sucks once you get past the novelty of more being in the game. Yoshi and Wario control like poo poo and Luigi just breaks the game.

Everyone like their hyperbole, but I agree with this with one personal major caveat; I legit had trouble making it through New Super Mario Bros 2 because it had noticeably uninspired and pretty lame level design. It's the only conventional Mario game I came away from thinking that I didn't really have a whole lot of fun.

I played through and 100%ed both NSMB2 and Super Mario Land 3D within the last four years. If you put a gun to my head and said you’d kill me unless I could describe just one single level from either game, I’d be dead instantly.

All my brain can recall are coins and a block head.

Nah there is an actual purple coin challenge when you’re playing as Mario called “Luigi’s Purple Coins”, it’s the purple coin comet for Toy Time Galaxy and I got game over three times before I finally did it lmao

Yeah, I dont remember anything specifically memorable about 3D land, but I remember it being solid, and feeling like Galaxy 2 seemed inspired by some of the level design/structure?

Exploration is ill-advised.

There was a big thing with one poster who thought he'd found the long-lost first instalment, and was transferring it to digital format... and when goons actually watched it they realised it was the second one that's already easy to find, and the goon hadn't checked beyond looking at the cover.

If you’re asking as a first time player, 9 for sure. 8’s systems are obtuse and broken and the plot is much the same. But it’s fun to dick with.

I didn't even find the pink bobomb to open the cannon, I just long jumped to the mushroom from the rolling log

I appreciate how much that's an option for doing things out of order or the 'wrong' way, good as a player to have the game reward your ingenuity instead of being railroaded into one way and one way only

9 has the better story and characters. Both games have pretty cool worlds in general. Both have flawed combat systems. 9's battles are slow as gently caress. 8 is fun if you like breaking games in half.

I recommend 9 personally, but 8 might appeal to you more depending on what you're looking for in a game.

Question for the switch brain trust:

Should I get Hades?

Thing is I don't think I like rogue likes as I can not bring myself to go back and play, for example, dead cells. Everyone assured me it was a good game and and not necessarily typical of the genre, but I just felt like I was barely progressing and the only boss fight I could reach seemed too hard for me.
I recently got through Blasthemous on ng+, a relatively unforgiving game, so maybe I'm not totally skill-less.

Thing is I really like the way hades looks and it seems more story driven, which is more my thing than whatever dead cells was going for.

9 is undoubtedly better aside from the battles being slow and dull.

8 has an overly ambitious battle system but once broken, which is almost inevitable, it’s not all that interesting unless you mess with limit breaks. It does have the better music though and Laguna who is the best, but the story is so loving stupid.
