16-year-old tomcat will occasionally have coughing fits, usually if I wake him up or if I pet him too much when he's laying down. Happens maybe once a day. He definitely has allergies (we discovered this when we gave him steroids for a stomach problem), and he may have asthma. Thoughts? He did this for a few days a few months ago then stopped. Now he's done it almost every day for most of September. He otherwise is normal, lovey, and interested in life and food. Any tips for identifying an infection or other problem? I hate taking him to the vet now since they don't let me in with him, and he once had a bad experience where he hulked out and scared the vet staff. Plus he doesn't seem particularly uncomfortable.

I don't want to alarm you or anything, and don't have any veterinary expertise so take this with a grain of salt, but... In humans, unexplained coughing fits in an older individual is a very typical way for some lung cancers to present. I don't think treatment would be in the cards for a 16-year-old cat, but if you have insurance that would cover it you might want to get it looked at so you can get a prognosis. He might be able to live with it for a long time without suffering much, but if I were you I'd want to know what was going on.

Yeah, my last cat was 12, and he had the occasional coughing fit too. Then he had one big one, and there was nothing the vets could do by then.
