Thanatosian posted:The whole show is a relentless indictment of capitalism. It's a loving polemic. The "relentless" indictment of capitalism in The Boys is all the tired superficial, obvious criticisms of superhero crap and capitalist mass culture in general that literally everybody has heard repeated thousand times over to the point that it has become so totally toothless that the capitalists have no problem coopting it and now monetize it into a safe, conformist package as yet another cultural commodity divorced from its political meaning.

I mean to be fair isn’t that all TV criticism of anything. you can be critical if anything on a tv show or music but in the end it doesn’t do anything

It normalizes the idea of 'the rot behind the facade.' If, for some reason, you want to judge a TV show as a form of activism then I think that's the angle. We keep hiring career criminals to elected offices then acting surprised at the results.

Only saw the first episode of the second season of the boys. But they went heavy on product placement that I don’t remember from season 1. Dude gets offered a can of fresco, the camera cut to a tight frame of the can before the guy takes it. Not sure how anti-capitalist it can be when it’s shilling Coca Cola products in a way so blatant it reminded me of the Pepsi product placement gag from Wayne’s World.

i mean it's associating fresca with a cult, but product placement operates mostly on "all advertising is good advertising" principles so you may have a point there

typically product placement is just it exists clearly in frame. a lot of the time it doesn’t actually have anything to do with what’s happening. and that’s subtle product placement

Academic publishing is some scummy poo poo in general. Universities have their researchers do all the research, whereupon other researchers use their time to verify them. Then the publisher prints it out puts it online. For this universities pay the publishers, and we're not talking pennies. It looks like there is a change coming, but for now we have a couple of large publishing companies basically sucking money out of research, with the added benefit of making it less available.
