Charles, have you been eyeing refurbished products? I wonder if it got bought by BA and they had Boeing repaint it, but it's waiting to go into service until travel ramps back up? Almost nothing flies into Paine that's not Boeing related.

Thermals aren't always easy to find, and if you can't find your own you join with a glider that is already circling. And it is an unnerving situation with just one other glider, especially if there aren't much height separation, you're constantly trying to keep the other glider in your sight. Or if you are higher and can only think about not bank stalling. Competitions are especially difficult. In a large competition about hundred gliders can be launched within an hour an they all will be circling near the 10 kilometer wide starting line waiting for it to open or for optimal weather conditions. Another potential issue is slowing down when you reach a thermal, which caused a fatal accident during a gliding competition in Finland in 2011. Two gliders were flying close to each other over 160 km/h. When the glider ahead and below reached a thermal it did the standard operation, pulled up to reduce speed and gain height, and it hit the bottom of the glider behind. Both gliders were equipped with Flarm, but that has the problem that the antennas may not be effective in all directions. Until recently wearing a parachute in glider has been mandatory. Just a couple years ago the regulation was relaxed and you are now allowed to fly without, but for example my club prohibits that. And most glider seats have been designed with parachute and you would have to use significant extra cushion.

IIRC, the closure was from a combination of almost zero demand because of the pandemic, and the fact that the brand new terminal already had issues with airplanes sinking into the asphalt outside.

First time I saw that WWII footage was in a VHS tape my neighbor bought at a yard sale a quarter of a century ago. It had some 50s (?) era voice over too. “I wonder who’s in that truck... Oh well, no friend of mine <annihilation in 50 cal>“ Also I wonder what the magnification on that lens is; it looks like the FW-190 being tailed is like 6 feet away

Probably stupid question... Does the center of gravity shift a ton when the large fire tankers drop their loads necessitating adjusting the trim and such as they go? Or are they designed to release in such a way that it empties evenly and doesn't shift the CoG significantly?

The tanks are usually installed close to the unladen center of gravity so that emptying them doesn't cause a shift in the overall loading moment. That's also one of the reasons fuel tanks are generally placed in the wings; that way fuel burn doesn't require continuous changes in trim. The pilot is still going to need to really be on top of the plane, because even if the CG doesn't change an inch, the sudden loss of thousands of pounds without any change in airspeed or AoA is going to result in a huge lift surplus and they're going to balloon upwards.
