Charades

https://www.britannica.com/topic/charade-game

quote:

The most popular form of this amusement is the acted charade, in which the different syllables are acted out. A brilliant description of the acted charade is given in William Makepeace Thackeray’s novel Vanity Fair (1848). In the United States the charade in somewhat different form was resurgent in the 1930s and 1940s and again after World War II. It was called “the Game” and was frequently played at parties. The group of players was divided into two teams. Each team designated one member of the opposing team to act out a quotation, the name of a person living or dead, a phrase, or an idea in such manner that his teammates might identify it. The designated actor was not permitted to use his voice or to indicate any inanimate object in the room. The actor tried to assist his teammates in guessing the subject in the shortest possible time. The team that arrived at the correct answer in the shorter time won.

Get bashed, platonist!

What I find peculiar about it is that Sculpture is a category on its own. As if you can’t just define whether someone is high brow or low brow based on whether they own a sculpture, because obviously everyone does, so instead you have to make the judgement based on what kind of sculpture they own. You wouldn’t want to be like one of those hillbillies that owns a parlor sculpture.

Literal free masons were pretty much like, the earliest reasonable definition of a working middle class.

Not serfs, but not profiting off the labor of others. They got special designation under law to travel and work for who they wanted.

Unions.

how long is it in the game before you figure out that the matches are ruined and you can't do the thing you need them for? I don't think it's like Sierra King's Quest long with that loving rat you need in the first 20 minutes or whatever, but is it long enough that you'd probably have saved since then?

This is true, they very much literally controlled the means of production, and used it to bring Monarchs to heel.

Wasn't the modern interpretation basically founded as a boys club for the bourgeoisie though?
