screamin and creamin posted:Sorry for ruining this otherwise laser-like focused thread for you, but the original subject I responded to was "imagine nations other than China still being mad about things like WWII", and I would contend that the Brits are a perfect example. Brit here! It's less about the Germans and more about all of WW2, as it's remembered today. Britain (or perhaps more specifically, England) has never properly acknowledged or come to terms with the fact that we were once one of the great world powers and now we're not any more (see the entirety of the Brexit saga as an example of this thinking disorder). Any brutally clear sighted evaluation of our current position would conclude that we're a mid-tier power whose future lies in combining with the other mid-tier powers that make up the EU, to form a genuinely powerful bloc. As a displacement activity from having to think these uncomfortable thoughts, Brits much prefer to focus on and talk up past triumphs and glories, as epitomised in the drunken football chant: "Two world wars and one world cup!" This fits my argument very nicely, as the World Cup in question was 1966 and our national football team has been poo poo for decades now... So you'll routinely hear confused, angry patriots saying things like: "Why should we even need to negotiate with Europe! We won WW2!! They should be obliged to give us whatever we want! I bet the Germans are at the bottom of all this etc etc etc." To bring this post back round to China, the counterpoint to us over-remembering past glories is that we've been very careful to forget all the more dubious stuff we did as an empire, such as making GBS threads all over China while they were in a position of weakness in the 19th century. The Chinese very much remember this, while the average Brit wouldn't have a clue.

UltraRed posted:Shadow run returns was ok. Just not great like the other 2. If you try to play it after the other two it’ll suck, the improvements were so substantial that going back is basically impossible. I mentioned it in some other threads but forgot to mention it here, I had a patient a few weeks ago on the ambulance who was in rough shape and completely out of it who had been trying to treat his pissing blood with TCM for months instead of going to a real doctor. It was awful, I was wondering if he had managed to finally poison the poo poo out of himself or if something else was going on, and just stuffing all his random crap in a bag for the doctors. My hatred of TCM grew three sizes that day. Turns out he had both poisoned the poo poo out of himself AND his bladder cancer had gone for a walk.

Shumagorath posted:that must be right up there with MMS users. It’s worse, IMO, since at least if it was MMS I’d know it was bleach. TCM is such a weird array of stuff, and often not the stuff it’s actually sold as, that it makes trying to make sense of the stuff on his shelf basically impossible and they had to wait for a ton of labs to come back. He was impressively poisoned, too. His heart was doing stuff that I had basically never seen before. Went from looking like a heart attack, to electrical blocks, to normal, and afib.

With that said: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3842885 is a Let's Play of Shadowrun: Dragonfall that's almost finished (probably 1 or 2 missions left,) and I think that Kanfy is going to be moving on to Shadowrun: Hong Kong after that. If you're not the type to play a game, that may be a good way to experience it. I've never played SR:HK myself, so I can't speak to the accuracy of the above statement.

Seven Hundred Bee posted:hi china thread, this is an odd question, but I am arguing with some... other posts... elsewhere, but can someone explain how voting actually works in china? all I find is CCP propaganda about how china is the most democratic country in the world There are various "elections" at different levels, where the voting is done only by select groups of Party members and the outcome is guaranteed in advance. You could think of it like a political party in a democracy picking who will be their leader, though there's not much of a free choice. How often these elections actually are competitive is unknown because the Party keeps government operations as much of a black box as possible. The votes we do see are the big ones at National People's Congress meetings and they're always 2186-3 types of bullshit dictatorship "votes". If you're talking about regular citizens voting, there is no such thing with one exception. Anything classified as a legal village will have elections for some local officials like village chiefs. We're talking areas with like a thousand people, nothing important. The officials have authority within their village but nothing beyond that. Also these elections also tend to be everyone voting for the candidate that was chosen in advance/bribed everyone/whatever, but not always. There is absolutely zero mechanism for any average Chinese citizen to vote or participate in any way in the government above village level (and the vast majority of the population is not living in villages), which is a big part of why average Chinese people don't really give a poo poo about politics, they have no say in it so why bother. Anyway, anyone who thinks China is in any way democratic is a loving moron. Don't waste your time with them. Grand Fromage fucked around with this message at 03:03 on Oct 2, 2020 |

i've had a hell of a time trying to figure out even the most basic aspects of how the Chinese government functions. I literally couldn't find one resource written in an approachable manner for a popular audience. I finally caved and picked up couple of academic or near academic books on Chinese politics in the Xi era and just before and both of them just completely breezed over the essential details like village and city organization, regions, Local Assemblies. LIke even if this poo poo is all a bunch of rubber stamps come on man. It's hosed up that literal Chinese propaganda is often the first thing you find when looking real information on this stuff, but that's how it is.
