 Chapter 42 – Prester John – 1320 to 1330 This is a tale that was begot in the early days of our history, a tale birthed in the suicidal expedition to reclaim the Crown of Thorns, a tale that begins with Sir Amaury, Knight of the Crown – who swore the Questing Vow at Cairo, who crossed the unforgiving sands of Asia, who battled in the great halls of Kaifeng... and who, after a long and tragic road, was finally laid to rest in a secluded valley, in distant India. But the years and leagues between India and Jerusalem are great, and as word of his deeds travelled, it morphed into something else... into a story, a myth, a prophecy. And two hundred years later, on the eve of a new century, his last male heir is born in a sprawling city on the River Ganges. Coming into this world under auspicious stars, the miracle makers of his court soon acclaim him as Vijaya, the Lord of Victory, the Great Redeemer, the Chosen One... On the day of his birth, he was proclaimed Prester John.  …only for this prophesied messiah to be gruesomely devoured by a wild beast, leaving his destiny unfulfilled. And in the aftermath of his death, the Oriental Church was viciously persecuted, the Ganges was set afire, and the line of Amaury was driven into exile.  This is where the true mover of the world comes into play. She wears heavy clothes of scaled iron and coils her hair beneath a mighty turban, and looking to all the world as Lord Vijaya come again, this 14-year-old child seizes the mantle once borne by her twin and proclaims herself… Prester John.  There were many who doubted, even as she rallied the surviving members of her family and seized power in Orissa.  There were many who plotted, even as she fought on the banks of the Ganges in furious battle for her homeland.  There were many who refused to bend, even as she proclaimed the coming of the Kingdom of the Prester John and expanded her frontiers into the West.  And those who doubted were soon forgotten, those who plotted were quickly buried, and those who refused to bend… well, they had their knees broken.  The world is about to change. Prester Jane, as history would remember her, is coming.    Thousands of miles away, praying to the same God in a very different Church, was the Emperor-Preferent Hugues.  Or, rather, I had others praying for me. I was only a baby back then, after all, and a baby plagued with disease and stress at that, leaving me bedridden into my infancy, and leaving Jerusalem in the hands of the young, brash lords of the Haute Cour – who quickly get to work. First and foremost, with many dynasties dragged to the brink of extinction by the Black Death, the assembly passed a law allowing Christian lords to take a second wife, ensuring that their ancient names survived these terrible times. Separated by a sea and practically a puppet, the Pope-in-Rome could only watch in horror and disgust.      Second, to protect against another wave of the plague, a holy order of healers were given license to roam the realm, tending to the sick and raising hospitals.    And third, to ensure stability in the realm, one Othon de Marash – a powerful lord in Galilee – was named Imperial Regent, to rule until the boy-emperor could be anointed and crowned on his sixteenth birthday.  Diligent and iron-fisted, the new regent quickly set about enforcing stability, crushing any ongoing rebellions before looking to his borders… to Jerusalem’s borders.  With the Black Death having devastated their godless country, the Lower Nile was rife with rebellion and the Egyptian Republic was finally collapsing, so there was no better time to secure the Holy Land...  And that was precisely what Lord Othon did, gathering an immense host of 30,000 crusaders on the very doorstep of Jerusalem, and leading that host into Ascalon in the summer of 1323.  The campaign was short, and decisive. The Egyptians couldn’t even outfit an army to meet us, with local rebels providing most of the resistance.  Even so, within a year the Ascalon strip was seized and secured, its fiefs distributed to the descendants of the lords that ruled in those areas before they were usurped by the republican heretics.  As the regent marched back to Jerusalem, the Haute Cour provided funds for the opening of a new university – the Jerusalemite Academy of Grandiose Studies – to house the Imperial Examinations and renew scholarship in the holy city.   The money to fund this university had to come from somewhere, and with thousands of peasants and commoners winding their way to Jerusalem – many as pilgrims, to thank the Almighty for sparing them from the Black Death – the Haute Cour levied a tax on any non-Christians looking to make pilgrimage to the holy city.   The realm was slowly recovering from the Black Death, and as pilgrims walked their roads and caravans plied their routes and lords waged their petty feuds, heads started turning to Jerusalem once more. Where was the Emperor? some folks were wondering. What was he like? Wasn’t his coronation coming up? What had he been doing this past decade?  Well, to put it simply, rotting in a tower. Lord Othon had been busy. He had bought the right people and threatened the rest, he had led men into battle and won great victories, he had intrigued against powerful rivals and emerged victorious (albeit… scarred). And finally, he had me, elected emperor in Jerusalem, locked in a tower on ridiculous charges of insanity. And that is where I celebrated my sixteenth birthday.   At the same time, to the distant west, the warlord they were calling Genghis come again, Atilla reborn, even Alexander of the Africans, had just reached the shores of the Mediterranean.  Standing on those shores, his one all-seeing eye looked to the place where Alexander once fought, where Atilla once pillaged, where Genghis once ravaged. And with the dawn of 1330, he began his invasions into Yurp.

They approach the dais with resolve under the hard gaze of the Regent. A myriad of holy symbols clank among their armour but all of them have an ashen circle in their foreheads, the fabled sun of the east, the mark of the Oriental Christians The Restoration of the Imperial Bloodline Decree Wherein the dignity of the Emperor-Preferant, his Dynasty, and Jerusalem was infringed upon by nefarious interests within the Haute Cour, we put forth as our Forced Policy: - Imperial Authority shall be restored. We shall transfer vassalage of Count Othon to be under the rule of his direct de-jure liege Princess Adelaide of Damascus and Galilee. The Emperor-Preferant shall also be released from wherever it is he is being held. A new Regency shall be established until the Emperor is fit to rule again, preferably, Count Valeran de Safaga as kin of Emperor Hughes. - Our learned men and women will make every attempt to figure out how to cure our ailing Emperor-Preferant, making him once more fit to rule. - We shall send a formal embassy, with gifts, to Presbyter Johannes "The Great", to form an Imperial Alliance against the Lord of the Hausa, the Barbarians of Yurp, and any other threats both foreign and domestic. As part of this embassy we shall welcome some of their priests and advisors to our realm to teach us what exactly happened to the Knights of the Thorn. With Emonie Egge-Thermdior we have both our first every female head of a merchant house, as well as our first female Doge. May there be many more, but let's try and kick-start this process a little with further progress. With hard work we can truly have equality between men and women within our realm. Did you know rats jump from sinking ships? I don't want Etoine to have to swim for his life, or me for that matter. Our navy has always been a big help for many of our most important wars, and we shouldn't ignore both their quality and quantity. I propose we improve our shipbuilding tech.
