Yeah but you can't move artillery with two dudes and a donkey and get off multiple shots from different positions that wipe out fortified positions and armor from 8 kilometers away without ever being detected.

As we are seeing in this thread, if the drones find your artillery then your artillery is all dead.

Well, given that Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Turkey have all closed their borders with Armenia, and there is only a single land route allowing supplies to enter Armenia via Iran at the moment, that could be very problematic for Armenia

Although I enjoy CaspianReport as a general geopolitics youtube feed, the host is Azeri, and some of the previous things posted in that channel regarding the conflict have been...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eD0S2XLKIUM

...somewhat biased. This video exemplifies the source of the issue, that both countries have historical claims to the region going back hundreds of years. Both sides point at various moments in history as justification for these claims. For instance, he cites censuses from the 19th century conducted when there was a majority Azeri population there. And Armenians point back even further in time to the first millennium AD, when there was more Armenian influence. So, long story short, it’s complicated, and has been for a long time.

Although, the one I just linked is from 9 years ago, and the video posted above this one from 4 years ago generally seems much more nuanced.

So, is there any interest in the actual region of being an independent state as a solution, as there is in Kashmir? Wondering how many cases of these disputed territorial conflicts could be resolved by splitting the difference and just letting the locals run things on their own in neutrality.

Officially they consider themselves as such, although it’s not internationally recognized.

quote:

Recognition process

No UN member states have recognised Artsakh [Armenia seems to, tho? - twoday], although some other unrecognised states have done so. Various sub-national administrations in the United States of America have issued calls for recognition of Artsakh by their national government.

In May 2012, the Rhode Island House of Representatives in the United States passed a resolution calling on President Barack Obama and the U.S. Congress to recognise the Republic of Artsakh. The resolution, adopted by the state's House of Representatives, encourages Artsakh's "efforts to develop as a free and independent nation".[85]
In August 2012, the Massachusetts House of Representatives passed a resolution calling on President Barack Obama and the U.S. Congress to recognise the Republic of Artsakh.[86]
On 24 October 2012, the New South Wales Legislative Council in Australia adopted a resolution recognising the Republic of Artsakh and the right to self-determination of its Armenian people. The motion acknowledges the 20th anniversary of independence for the Republic of Artsakh, it supports the right to self-determination of its people, and it "calls on the Commonwealth Government [of Australia] to officially recognise the independence of the Republic of Artsakh and strengthen Australia's relationship with the Artsakh and its citizens".[87]
In April 2013, the Maine House of Representatives in the United States passed a resolution accepting Artsakh's independence and urging President Barack Obama to also accept Artsakh's independence.[88]
In April 2013, Fresno County in California recognised Nagorno-Karabakh.[89][90]
In May 2013, the Louisiana State Senate in the United States passed a resolution accepting Artsakh's independence and expressed support for the Artsakh Republic's efforts to develop as a free and independent nation.[91]
In November 2013, Highland, California, recognised Artsakh and was twinned with Berdzor.[89][92]
In January 2014, Los Angeles recognised Artsakh.[93]
In May 2014, the California State Assembly passed a measure recognizing Artsakh's independence with a 70–1 vote.[94] The measure also calls for President Barack Obama and the U.S. Congress to recognise Artsakh Republic.[95]
In May 2014, the Louisiana State Senate adopted a resolution saluting the Artsakh Republic's independence and urging the U.S. President and Congress to "Support Self-Determination and Democratic Independence of the Artsakh Republic".[96]
On 27 August 2014, the California State Senate voted unanimously (23–0) to pass Assembly Joint Resolution 32, recognising the Republic of Nagorno Karabakh as a sovereign state. The resolution encourages Artsakh's efforts to develop as a free and independent nation and formally calls upon the President and Congress of the United States to support the self-determination and democratic independence of the Artsakh Republic.[97][98]
On 3 March 2016, Georgia became the sixth state of the U.S. to recognize the independence of Artsakh.[99]
On 30 March 2016, Hawaii unanimously became the seventh state to recognize Artsakh. The Hawaii House of Representatives placed bill H.R. 167 into effect despite pressure from Azerbaijani diplomats and Washington D.C.[100]
On 30 March 2016, the US Embassy in Azerbaijan issued a declaration that US foreign state policy is determined at a federal government level, and that the United States does not recognize the Artsakh Republic.[101] This statement was delivered shortly after Azerbaijan's president, president Ilham Aliyev, arrived in Washington D.C. for bilateral discussions.
On 5 May 2016, the Government of Armenia approved the bill on recognition of the independence of the Republic of Artsakh. It was announced, that the recognition of the independence of the Artsakh Republic is "due to the results of discussions between Armenia and Artsakh, [and] considering further developments, including external factors".[102]
On 28 September 2017, Michigan became the 8th U.S. state to recognize the independent Republic of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabagh). The bipartisan measure calls upon the U.S. to establish economic and cultural ties with the Artsakh Republic and support peace and stability across the South Caucasus.[103]

Yeah, but I'm wondering if they're independent now but seek future annexation into Armenia, sort of like Russia does with the self-declared Donbass republics or with regions like South Ossetia. Not exactly independent and neutral like in the case of a hypothetical truly independent Kashmir.

I would say it is simply the inevitable result of the Pax Americana being unsustainable for more than a decade or two (if that) because...have you looked at the United States?

Btw, the US has minimal pull in the conflict largely because the former US ambassador to Baku openly called for regime change in a few years back and permanently blew up US - Azerbaijani relations.
