Not enough is being said that once WWE sees that one of their employees has been busted sending creepy solicitous grooming-esque txts to an underage girl, their response is to make an angle where one of their employees sends creepy, flirtatious texts to a young girl. (It's completely different! Aaliyah is 19, so that makes it not creepy at all.) The loving company isn't even trying to brush it under the rug, like they have done with Riddle and Velveteen Dream. They are actively laughing at those of us who find a 60 year old asking about a 16 year old sleeping alone creepy and wrong. True, no laws have been broken, but that doesn't stop it from being creepy, wrong, and not something to be made light of.

Per Mike Johnson at PWInsider (I can see the suit was filed, but haven't bought the complaint because of the ridiculous sticker shock that the Superior Court website brings), Ryan filed a second lawsuit on the same day. This one named a California-based wrestler and added a bunch of Jane Does. So he's going all in. He's acting like he's loving McMartin Preschool. Does he NOT realize how many people in wrestling will be happy to testify against him?

They absolutely don't give a gently caress.

according to the internet, Joey Ryan has now made his 'sorry that you thought I did something wrong' video private. This might have been talked about already but I looked some and it's tough to re-read a ton of the thread because of the subject matter.

I'm fairly certain Joey's strategy is that none of his accusers have the money to make it to court so he can claim that these women all levied "False claims and wouldn't show up in court". He's doing the same thing WWE does and hoping that women will either retract their statements as out of court settlements or try and fight so he can out-spend them and ruin their lives via attrition (Like WWE did to CM Punk, successfully)

Maybe it's naive but I feel pretty confident that the wrestling business is done with Joey Ryan no matter how this suit plays out. Even Bill Cosby and Harvey Weinstein eventually ran out of defenders once the evidence was too big to ignore/downplay, and Joey is lucky he's not sitting in a jail cell next to them.

Even David Starr has a higher chance of wrestling again than Joey Ryan and I think even he will never be booked again. Ryan's hosed.

Some shitbag indie will book Ryan but no one prominent will: and I suspect that after its proven that he's not a draw those bookings might dry up. Starr I'm less sure of: he's legitimately vanished and that might be an attempt to just disappear from the public eye but he might also try to sneak back in a couple of years. Probably more risk of him getting back into more prominent spots than Ryan but I think its highly unlikely either way.Breitbart Is Rightbart posted:Between this and Sid Scala, how is it legal for these loving jack offs to sue their victims Its legal for them to do it for the same reason that its legal for someone that genuinely lost income through genuine defamation to sue the people that made whatever allegations caused it: the court case theoretically is the place where who's in the wrong would be decided and there's no real way to prevent bad people from suing people in this way that wouldn't also lock people out from suing people that have wronged them. Some states have anti-SLAPP laws that are designed to try and root out this sort of case where people are using the courts to intimidate and silence people by suing them for things that the plaintiff knows won't win in court but there aren't Federal versions of those and this is in Federal court - but those don't make this sort of thing illegal: it just speeds up the process and ensures that there's a basic standard that cases like this have to meet before they actually go into the system. I'd love it if there's a way where you could cut out the cases that are obvious attempts at harassment before they get anywhere but in order to do that you sort of need to have a fair hearing to consider things.

davidbix posted:...what was the larger context here? The section was largely a summary of a UK article. It went from talking about the article to editorializing to talking about something a promoter wanted very quickly. I would quote the whole article, but I think that is against the rules of the board. The structure was really awkward. This is where it appeared: “The disturbing reality and lived experience for many female wrestlers is, more often than not, entrenched in misogyny. I have heard horrific tales from female wrestlers who were faced with threats of rape or sexual assault, all in the name of friendly banter. I have also heard from women as young as 13 or 14, who, at the start of their careers, were the targets of vile behaviors that saw male wrestlers competing to be the one to take their virginity.” She noted the wrestling industry was filled with harrowing stories of emotional and sexual abuse, and noted that it lacks of governing body and checks and balances, and how wrestling falls through the cracks because it’s not considered sport nor a part of entertainment. But thus far, nothing has really happened. Those who complained the loudest, also complained about any attempts at solutions, focusing on villains, some clearly real, but in other cases, not caring about whether they were or not. Andy Quildan of RevPro said he wants an independent body governing this and it being held accountable. “British wrestling needs to focus on the word professional in professional wrestling. In terms of fundamentally changing people’s mindsets it’s a change that needs to be made from the grassroots up.”

Still reads pretty bad to me! Maybe I'm missing some context but when I see that my first thought is that it's influenced by the Lance Storm/ban intergender wrestling conversation that got blowback. Well meaning people who tried to discuss a solution and only got yelled at! Nothing will make the complainers happy!

To be fair to Dave, it's not hard to imagine there being people on the internet who are more focused on points-scoring than establishing an actual framework for improving conditions. But even so, you are doing a massive disservice to an important movement by flattening it out to the worst people carrying the banner and saying "You can't win with these people"

Good or bad, I don't see how the context changes it. It is preceded by other people's thoughts and followed by other people's thoughts. It's editorializing inserted between the thoughts of other people. The quoted bit had the full editorializing portion.

I have a definite problem with his use of the word "solutions", because he seems to be using that as a shorthand for "making a lovely half-hearted apology and then immediately carrying on with business as usual" like yeah no poo poo people complained when that was what they were offered, because it was literally meaningless and changed nothing

Saying "ban intergender wrestling" or "ban underage training" are "solutions" to "a ton of the people in wrestling are predators and its an open secret that no one does anything about" feels like saying "the army is filled with rapists so lets stop making women soldiers" or "the cops are racist so lets give them a wide berth" or something. Its not a solution. Its not an address to what's wrong. Its at best an attempt to work around the problem by putting the onus on the would be victims to make sacrifices and compromises.
