I remember being young and insulated enough to think that decorum and proper process was some higher elevation to stand by in uncertain times; it was a way to project stability, consistency, integrity, and nobility in the face of evil. And hey, it wasn't too bad for the PR either. Then my face ate dirt for the first time and realized that a lot of these fuckers can and would kill me based on the most arbitrary of factors, and that by not fighting back I was enabling them to do so. I snapped out of that poo poo real loving fast. Gandalf can tut tut me all the gently caress he wants from his choir of heavenly buttplugs. If someone declares people with your qualities an enemy, you're not being a hypocrite by treating them like one in-turn.

It seems a pretty straightforward take on the death penalty, which was a political issue in the UK around the time Tolkein was writing. I think one's general opinions on the death penalty aren't really applicable to the leaders of nations.
