One nice thing is that your collection is cumulative- if you start a new game you still have all the audio logs from before and can finish it off that way.

I'm of two minds about that. Yep, thats the drawback. After you've finished all that, there are very few reasons to go back to the streets of New Mombassa level.

IIRC the netcode in co-op is still the creaky old Xbox/360 era lockstep netcode, and as such it lacks a lot of the niceties added to the non-co-op netcode.

To be fair, your up and down bandwidth have nothing to do with game lag. Games use barely any band at all, and higher band internet doesn't really corollate with lower latency.
(Although ISPs directly lie and advertise like that is the case)

But also the things already said about co-op code.

Just finished ODST for the first time, pretty neat.

So is the implication that all the "guiding" by the city AI just the engineer working through it?

Also Halo timeline is really funny/funky. Apparently drones can set up a hive in the span of a day or two (Halo 2 feels like it pretty clearly sets out "covenant show up -> cruiser slipspaces out" to happen within about a day) but there's like a month gap between then end of ODST and Sgt. Johnson arriving back at earth. (With a bit longer before Chief arrives?)

Also I guess the "Auotmag" mentioned in the ODST related challenges is just the silenced pistol? The "auto" part was making me hope for a full-auto pistol or something. Also, the fact that it doesn't seem to be called automag when you pick it up?

Anyone else think the ODST armour looked cooler in Halo 2? It had a navy seals look to it while the Halo 3 armour looks like human sized Spartan suits

Animal Friend
Sep 7, 2011

The way they look in Halo 2 Anniversary is the best imo. The Halo 2 art design had everything leaner in look. Even the Mark VI armour looks sleeker and it fits with the faster pace of the game. I still like the 3 era ODST helmet, but that suit of armour looks like it weighs a ton (certainly too heavy for jetpacks anyway... RIP Bullfrogs). I think they also retconned the heavily armoured marines in Halo CE to being ODST as well? Not sure.

Its weird to me that in Halo 2 you see ODSTs in the airlocks and stuff, like obviously that suit is pressurized which makes sense considering they're also (temporarily) astronauts. Then in ODST the game you have open-finger gloves and helmets that keep falling off.

So is this a known bug or something where selecting the "Competitive Score" or "Competitive Time" options in mission select will usually place the both the Time & Score counts in the lower right-hand corner of your HUD...but then other times, without changing anything, it'll only display one of them? I'm not even sure at this point which way is the "correct" way.

It's weird how inconsistent it is, and it's been doing this in (at least) Reach and H3. Sometimes it'll show both, sometimes only one. I wish I could consistently have both shown simultaneously because of the way scores and times interact with each other, it seems kind of stupid to only want to see one or the other.

Finished ODST on LASO, it’s the easiest of the bunch so far. Plenty of invincible allies to draw fire, few Hunters, more health than Master Chief gets, and no Elites to make life hell. Only really tricky bit was the vehicle escort section at the end.

With practice much of the game is trivial even on Legendary if you have this combo. The DMR is a goddamned whirlwind machine of death for this.

Also:
- the Bubble Shield heals
- significant portions of Nightfall can be skipped even on Legendary
- in Long Night of Solace, use the trick to get into the Pelican's turret. Trying to do that final fight legitimately on Legendary solo is hellish and was easily the single hardest moment of the game for me. I've never regretted using the turret on every subsequent playthrough.

I’ll admit that I didn’t give the plasma pistol a fair shake in my first playthrus on Heroic difficulty; it was only after I started going after par scores and enabled the skull that exaggerated weaknesses and resistances where it suddenly became something of a necessity, and I realized how potent the combo of plasma pistol & magnum/DMR/battle rifle were.

Plasma pistol has been an excellent weapon since H:CE, when it was a rapid fire minimum with near-perfect accuracy.

Animal Friend

The main thing for Legendary is planning.

Not sure how specific this is for Reach but generally weapons will despawn but often if you've personally handled them they will stay on the ground. Be sure to "juggle" through plasma pistols on the ground so you can grab another one later in an engagement if you need. Also swap out plasma for a human pistol where possible if you're versing grunts/jackals. Save your DMR/Sniper/Power weapons for Elites. You should have a passable memory of what big bads show up and when from your previous play throughs- save your power weapons for that.

Also grenades got a serious area debuff in Reach and on Legendary elites will almost always dodge frag grenades. Only use frags on groups of grunts and jackals. For elites use plasmas- and you can get easy-ish sticks by abusing the AI. Pop out of cover on one side, wait for them to start doing suppressing fire, pop out the other side and throw the sticky. This is part of why people like using hologram (I usually just stuck with sprint).

With Elites, shoot the weakest ones first. Rangers (the big blue faceplates) can be taken out with a few DMR shots- don't need to waste plasma on them. Same with the regular blue elites. If you can take them down first for less ammo, thats less rounds coming your way while you take your time and plasma combo/grenade the majors and zealots ect. The weaker elites are also easier to bum rush- if you can get a couple hits on them with any gun you can generally melee, pull back then melee again and take them down fairly quickly if you time it right.

Vehicle sections are easy if you can get a wraith- just use a DMR/Needle rifle/sniper and take out the turret, then plasma pistol EMP, board and punch out the pilot. It can take some trial and error but it generally makes it less of a slog. With a jetpack you can steal a Banshee using the EMP grenade launcher at the end of The Package for a smooth ride.

Brutes get hosed up by needle rifles in Reach. They're not a threat at all unless they're cheiftans.

Also YMMV but often I'll give power weapons low on ammo to friendly AI. In Halo 2/3 this works much better since beam rifles are everywhere and the AI seems more competant. Reach friendly AI loves to rocket me in the back or just fall down ravines. In Reach I had 3 marines alive into the final fight on Long Night of Solace since I gave them all concussion rifles.

awww yeaaaaah, man, can't believe i forgot about Hologram. that bit of gear is fuckin' legendary. i'm not great at grenade tossin' though i used it to draw fire. it's brilliant for that. pop out of cover, let the hologram draw fire, and kill whichever hapless Elite pops its head out. i used Bubble Shield and Hologram exclusively when going through Legendary. Sprint was fine but I just kept it until I could switch it out. I only used Jetpack when you had to.

Nthing Needlers and Brutes. It absolutely wrecks their poo poo. On levels where there are no Elites, like Exodus, you should always have a Needler with you.

For Tip of the Spear, when you get to the space battle, stay behind the space station. Let your allied ships and the base defenses do the heavy lifting for you. This segment sucks on Legendary as your ship gets shredded if its in the open and... there's no cover ever. Stick behind the station and duck out and pick off any enemy that comes close. Sometimes one will come around behind the station and you need to kill them real quick, but just make sure you stay out of the line of fire.

I always felt Reach was easier than Halo 3 by virtue of having invincible allies for significant chunks of the game. I'm still working my way through Halo 1 and there are sections there that are giving me way more trouble than Reach ever did. (Reach also has so many more toys to deal with Elites that I would always find some way around).

Reach elites have such bullshit levels of shield hp that they can shrug off plasma sticks or plasma pistol overcharges. They’re absolute tanks. That’s one of the reasons I don’t think it quite lives up to Halo 1; those elites were formidable foes because of their speed and aggression, not because someone made number big.

Halo 2 elites are even worse, though. I still don’t fully comprehend how I ever made it through Cairo Station LASO. I just remember shoving Johnson around with an energy sword.
