Mussolini didn't actually make the trains run on time. That was just a sarcastic joke that Italians told. The modern equivalent would be "wow this is so much winning, I'm tired of all the winning."

My dad still puts a flag up. He’s a die hard Bernie supporter but was in the Air Force for 20 years. He’s a weird hybrid of Vermont style hippy who also loves rockets and space and also wants UHC and thinks libs suck because they aren’t progressive. The only reason he was in the AF was because he was in the space program and got to build flight simulators and work on the space shuttle.

I think the most generous interpretation of what Tracey is trying to say is like, remember at the beginning of the pandemic when every other person was falling for hoaxes that Trump was going to send in the national guard to keep everybody on lockdown? If he had cared about the virus he might have done something like that.

this only works if you accept the fairly-plausible assumption that Michael Tracey thinks "fascism" equals "use of force by the state"

Reminds me of those people who get tattoos that supposedly mean "strength" in Chinese but actually translate to "I like figure skating" (not that there's anything wrong with that!)

So he isn't saying he thinks fascist dictatorships are better at responding to threats than democracies, as fascists believe but is sometimes parroted uncritically by the ignorant, but that fascist dictatorships care about their citizens more than democracies? Which fascists claim but nobody really believes?

If he had cared about the virus he might have done something like that. It's meant to be a "dig" at people responding to "Biden is a SOCIALIST who will implement TERRIBLE, EVIL policies like universal health care, climate change action, police accountability etc. etc." with "all of that sounds pretty cool, I wish Biden were actually a socialist." Michael Tracey tries to flip it against Trump critics and, being an idiot, both completely botches the execution and inadverdently admits that he thinks fascism is cool and good. E: The point he thinks he's making is the standard centrist "leftism = socialism = communism = Stalin = Hitler" fallacy. Zulily Zoetrope has a new favorite as of 21:05 on Oct 4, 2020 |

I mean. There's a lot of stuff I don't necessarily disagree with (find consenting adult partners, find resources to help manage your illness) but in what world would an admitted and self-aware pedophile be able to teach minors? At all? Surely the goal would be to avoid children??

CSEM is "real children were harmed to make this" child porn as opposed to things like writing or drawings
|
# ? Oct 4, 2020 22:27 |

More specifically CSEM is used to distinguish it from pornography where (theoretically at least) there is informed consent going on with all parties. Porn has its own problems but there is potential for it to be healthy where as CSEM does not have that.

Imagine being someone who thinks Trump has empathy.

Empathy is being able to feel for someone without having gone through their problem yourself. Sympathy is what you have when you care about something after you've gone through it. So even if you take his point at face value it's still wrong.

subpar anachronism posted:I think you have that mixed up, though I hate to say Scott Adams is correct for any reason. No, they were mostly right. Sympathy is when you reach an understanding of someone based on your own experience, Empathy is when you reach that understanding through knowing someone. If someone loses a mom to COVID you'd have sympathy with them because you'd lost someone close to you from a disease, you'd have empathy with them because you understand how close they were to their mom. If Trump has greater understanding of the disease's tolls only after experiencing it himself that's definitely sympathy not empathy.

Skwirl posted:No, they were mostly right. Sympathy is when you reach an understanding of someone based on your own experience, Empathy is when you reach that understanding through knowing someone. This is not how most people use these words. Empathy connotes a shared emotion; sympathy is concern for someone without sharing their emotion. Someone who has not had COVID or a similar serious illness might have sympathy for those who do, but not empathy.

"Honey is an enzyme" gets me the most, but I'm eternally yelling about recipes labeled "Sugar free (thing that definitely should have sugar in it,)" and then you read the recipe and it's full of honey.
