I was thinking about reconstructing a niche message board that I was on, it became unhosted in like 2009. But the guy who owned the old domain gave me the .sql file. One of these days I'm going to take a hard look at seeing if I can cram it into currently-existing forum software, because it contains thousands of posts from my idiot teenage self. Assuming it's possible. I wonder if the proliferation of other social media sites is what killed half of them, or if people naturally get less stoked about socializing as they get older. Or, nerds over time learn to socialize better irl and see less of a refuge in pouring yourself out on a message board.

I'm trying to find a video of Viagra's "remember that guy?" commercial from 2004'ish. It was about how this middle-aged guy took Viagra and then just wanted to gently caress his wife all the time, and the commercial ends with making his best sexhaver face while sprouting blue devil horns (from the "V" in Viagra). It was the corniest loving commercial and I want to laugh at it again. I can find plenty of articles referencing it (since the FDA had it pulled), but I've had no luck finding a video. If anybody can track this video down, you will be my hero.

Assuming it's possible. I’m fairly certain Reddit killed a bunch of them as well. Boards require setup knowledge and hosting costs have to be paid by someone, and moderating is a thankless job because the Venn diagram of knowledgeable people and grognards who want to keep the rabble out is a circle. Some boards just shoot themselves in the foot by upgrading to a “better” version of vBulletin and having a boatload of people complain about the good old times where the board was still fast and the design was better. Others just get hacked every month because the admin doesn’t know how to patch servers. Reddit - for all its other myriad flaws - takes that out of your hands, so starting some niche forum and lording over it is trivial.

From what I’ve heard Facebook Groups is the other major destination for the exodus from message boards. And that makes sense to some extent for communities where media plays a large role since Facebook makes it much easier to manage and display images/video. I occasionally consider making a Facebook account for the purpose of joining various groups, but I never seem to quite get around to it.

Tiggum posted:It really doesn't. You get absolutely no control over how anything is cropped or laid out. Well isn't that true for most any forum software? I meant more in terms of how things are uploaded and displayed. I cannot count how many times I've seen messages to the effect of "edit: not sure why pictures aren't showing up" on various forums. One I am on that uses an outdated version of I think IP Board has no fewer than three ways to display images--embedded from Imgur or similar, a single image upload, or uploading an album, and one of my ad blockers I think breaks the latter two.

That is another place on the internet that has not really changed in decades. I visit reddit but is awful. For example, every time I visit reddit's /video games it is nothing but posts like "I have not played a video game ever and for my birthday I got myself a switch!" or a post of some fanart that was stolen. I visit lots of old topic boards and some of them are still a little active but the last 5 years have really killed them off. I remember visiting message boards a must for certain hobbies/interests before youtube because they were the only way you could find that specific information but youtube has replaced message boards for looking up how to do stuff as well.

I went on a deep dive a while back of all the webcomics I used to read. Finding out that Megatokyo is still updating (and I use the term 'updating' loosely) kind of made me sad.
