0.000% of Communism has been built. Evil child-murdering billionaires still rule the world with a shit-eating grin. All he has managed to do is make himself *sad*. It has, however, made him into a very, very smart boy with something like a university degree in Truth. Instead of building Communism, he now builds a precise model of this grotesque, duplicitous world.

Is it this division?

When my gran had colon cancer that basically rendered her unable to eat she was on a lot of morphine and for a straight-laced Tory voter it was morbidly funny when she said she finally understood why people got into drugs.

The app is pointless as long as there is insufficient testing capability and as long as the government has no interest in performing contact tracing. It’ll only get more pointless as people realise how pointless it is and stop using it :waycool:

By Christmas Boris will probably call a halt to using the app and blame the public for poor uptake

Just been informed I'm being made redundant (process begins tomorrow but I'm in a pool of one). I've worked here a long time - over 15 years. I am very aware that the company cannot afford my salary, and I've been furloughed since June. Anyone got any advice on things I should ask about? My immediate inclination is to ask how much I'm getting, and tell them to get on with it - but I've never done this before.

I got a notification the other day that said "someone near you has reported..." and then when I tapped it to get more information it just took me straight to the app with no further information and disappeared, so gently caress knows what that was supposed to tell me to do.

Depending how you feel about things, find out if they will give you gardening leave.

When I got made redundant in 1997 following the 6 week 'consultation' my boss said they would let me have time off for interviews while I worked the 8 weeks notice.
I said I'd rather stay home and paint my toenails for 2 months thanks (I was not sad to get laid off) and demanded (and got) my pay-off in a cheque the same day (otherwise they wanted to pay me on the normal pay schedule). 4 days later I went to a temp agency and got another job so essentially was paid 'double bubble' for 7 weeks.

Also: what is and isn't taxable - my info is probably out of date but if you are contractually entitled to a particular redundancy payout (over and above statutory) then it is taxable but if it is not in your contract and they offer it anyway, then it isn't up to something like £32k. (NB - find out, don't rely on my half memories!)

What support will they offer you to find another job eg training courses etc (as in will they pay!)

What happens about any annual leave entitlement you may not have taken?

Any limitations on being re-employed by the company after whatever the minimum time period is for it to be a legitimate redundancy (just in case, you never know!)

What happens to your pension?

If you have a union rep, get them to come along to whatever chat you get with the boss and HR (or zoom or Teams or whatever).

Also be wary of challenging - when I got laid off I was very happy about it, others were not. But for all the time they were arguing the toss with HR, their notice period was getting shorter and the money they would get was getting smaller. (I'm not quite sure how that worked!)

Once you are on morphine for terminal cancer care its basically over. Or at least it was for both of my parents, both went within 2 days of being put on morphine to manage the pain.

Yeah, it's more of a mental health hazard for the pain management specialists themselves, having to manage expectations like that.

Its because its grim up north. The weather.

Rain and cold makes people go inside and infect each other sharing unventilated tight space and shared surfaces. Vit D levels drop without as much sun which apparently is a thing with corona. Less UV rays burning up the virus on outside surfaces.

Once it takes off in a city it's likely to spread quicker within it than to other cities because people move around in cities more than they move between them.

Liverpool resident here: it's because scousers absolutely positively will not be told what to do in any circumstances, partly because they're extremely stubborn and also because there's an ingrained distrust of any conservative government since that time they thought about just effectively walling it off from the rest of the country

I think people are more used to socialising in cities with all the junk they have, so being under lockdown makes people miss all the distractions and nowhere to really wander. Meanwhile in towns and villages there's gently caress all to do anyway so you may as well stay inside and if you go out there's lots of big outdoor spaces to frolic in.

Something like that anyway. I live in West Yorkshire and work in Manchester, nobody seems to really care in Manchester any more (at least, the people who are out and about) whilst the village I live in people wear masks all the time and there's little close contact besides the one shop everyone uses.

e: Sorry to hear you're being made redundant Sanford, you sounded like a good comrade at where you work. Hopefully you get a nice wedge and find something else to do soon. A lot of places advertise jobs in a certain location but allow remote working, so its worth casting a wider net than you may usually do (though if you've been employed for 15 years maybe looking for jobs is a novel experience, let us know how you get on)

For what it's worth, technically you're not allowed to work for another company while on gardening leave; you still work for your current one and your contract probably has verbiage about exclusive use of your labour, they just don't expect you to come in. Not that they'll probably care, especially for something like temp work.

And yeah, challenging isn't likely to get you anywhere. I had a coworker try arguing when they shut down the entire office I worked in and chucked everyone out. If they've decided to do it you're not going to talk them out of it at this stage.

Union. Union. UNION. If you don't have a union (why don't you have a union??) then call up the appropriate one and ask if you can get advice if you join up, they almost definitely will not represent you though, but it doesn't sound like you'll need it if you're not contesting. Call up your local branch and not the HQ, as they are sometimes more lenient on advice/representation.

Good luck!

I didn't get taxed on my 14k from the NHS in 2016 and that's standard NHS level payoff (1 month pay/year worked there), so presumably written into the contract. They tried to do me out of it by saying that I was refusing equivalent work. I successfully argued that offering me a band 4 position when still expecting me to train the remaining band 5 was an insult to my level of experience and not appropriate employment.

It was such a poo poo place to work by then and the team I was in was so hostile that I got the head of Networks to come into my meeting with me instead of my own team lead
