It's almost a Cat 5 at this point. 145 MPH sustained is I think about where Laura was at landfall in LA.

sure the saffir–simpson hurricane wind scale is a simplified thing, that's kinda the point. that, and how it's concerned with wind speed because that's the most deadly thing about hurricanes. we care about wind because you need to know whether your shelter is adequate in the short term, and what sort of infrastructure damage to expect in the longer term. having a simple number for that communicates this easily to people

Right, the old system is kinda problematic while figuring out an effective new system that would better describe the potential damaging events would be extremely difficult and expecting people to actually understand more nuance and science-y stuff (even if it's at a 5th grade level) is unrealistic.

I don't think we should go through the time/effort to design a new system, but it's still true that our current categorization scheme is not the entire story.

What do you know of fear? Fear is for the cat 5's when the storm surge rises 40 feet.
Fear is for the long nights without light, or air conditioning, or internet!
That is the time for fear my little lord, when the forecast tracks are miles away from the cone.
A decade ago there came a season that lasted until Zeta, people sucked mud out of their homes, and demolished the soggy drywall, and wept and saw the tears disappear in their damp foyers.
So is this the sort of story you like? In that darkness the Greek alphabet came for the first time, they swept through cities, their cones of death and feeder bands flooding everything!

Would it be better or worse to just double tap Lake Charles? I imagine a lot of folks are still evacuated and it's just going to knock down stuff that's already gotta be knocked down anyway, right? Or am I just completely wrong?

You might be right. There are tens of thousands who are still evacuees from the wreckage of the last one.

The New Orleans mayor was talking in her press conference about making plans for the like, 12,000 Lake Charles people who are still holed up here if New Orleans has to be evacuated for this one (looking unlikely at this point).

poo poo is so hosed. There’s like over 10k evacuees in New Orleans alone. I walk by a handful of them every day going to/from work in the FQ. These are not folks who are well off.

Not only are the facing the possibility of not returning home anytime soon, but apparently whatever aid they’re receiving is drying up, enough that a group of them held a press conference today asking the state for more help.

It doesn't seem like NO will have to evacuate but they could have some tropical storm force winds in that area depending on how the storm turns once it makes landfall Friday afternoon.

Unfortunately it does seem like Lake Charles is going to get some kind of hit from this storm.

If the Biden Administration wanted to freak people out about climate change, they would officially re-draw the map of the U.S. because what Louisiana's coast actually looks like right now is pretty drastically different from what's on our maps. The sea has claimed a lot.

I realize literally anyone can post on Medium, but this article has stark graphics of exactly this phenomenon (article is extensively footnoted and fact-checked as well). It's pretty chilling.
