Looking forward to the crystal clarity of AMD marketing a product called "R7 5700X" at the same time that its graphics division is selling a product called "RX 5700XT"

As far as other prices go, the launch 5950x price is rough. I wanted to go from a 3900x to a 5950x, but I wanted to do it for closer to $650 than $800. The 5900x seems kind of reasonable and the 6c seems kind of rough and hard to justify over just getting a 3600. I'm hoping this is an "MSRP" situation where Microcenter has it for $50 less with another $25-$50 off if you buy a motherboard.

Given the 10900k is ~$650, $550 for the 5900X is real good. $800 honestly isn't a bad deal for a 16c part, either, at only a 10%/core premium over the 5900X.

It's still a lot of money to dump on a CPU, though.

I do hope they adjust the 5800X price, because right now it's kinda awkward.

I mean, at least 1 leaked gaming benchmark had the 5800X beat the 10900K handily. If that holds true (or is even in the ballpark) the $450 price is pretty spicy but understandable.

e: Going from 8 to 12 cores doesn't really do anything for gaming and the clock speed difference between the 5800X and 5900X is 0.1, so that leaves the architecture improvements that are common across the Zen 3 line.

I thought about it a bit and I think the real reason they priced it that way is to make zen2 still competitive and selling. They ended up in an awkward position last time where no one wanted zen+ stock.

3900x is $399 right now, 3900XT is $429. 3600XT $229, 3600 $179.99. 3700x $279.99. I would buy a zen2 over the zen3 6c/8c at the launch prices if retailers adhere to MSRP.

I'll probably wait until early Q2 next year to decide on upgrading from a 3900x. I could use the extra single threaded performance, and I regularly do max out all 12 cores. It's just hard to justify the price when I'm not really using my desktop for work right now.

Buying now vs. later is always about if your current PC is doing the job or not.

Mine is starting to eat poo poo with its old i5, so hypothetical 2021 better deals don't really help my PC in the near future. If it was meaningfully better I'd just ride it out until Zen 4 or whatever.

A fair amount of the 5800X leaks had the thing at 5ghz all core, which we now know is fairly significantly above what the advertised clocks are. Pretty possible those were high OC stability runs from board partners with chillers. Who knows until we see reviews, but AMDs own marketing numbers today had the 4.9Ghz (extremely rare single core boost) 5950X only slightly ahead of a 10900k at 1080p.

I don't think it is likely the 5800X will get there... and even if it did, the 10850k is there and is the same price+available today. The pricing has turned this from an extreme AMD dunk to a mild AMD dunk, imo. Which is of course exactly what AMD wants, really. This aint a charity. As always, wait for reviews folks.

Which one? The ones I saw in the presentation were all 10900k vs 5900X and 10700k vs 5800X. The 5800X beating the 10900k at all, let alone handily, doesn't make any real sense given that the 5900X vs 10900k benches were all pretty close with a few exceptions, and the 5800X is slower.

Yeah, I agree that that was the point: AMD doesn't have to prove themselves anymore and convince people to give them a try with lowball pricing. Now they just have to stay slightly ahead of Intel in price:performance, which means rising prices until Intel decides to start chopping.

The pricing is a pretty good indication that the 5600X could be slightly ahead, I think they'd still be undercutting Intel per-core if they didn't have at least parity.

For the 5600X and 5800X only if you compare to the 3600X and 3800X, which were frankly for suckers and got outsold by like 5:1. It's a $100 increase from a more practical point of view.

This is really misleading. No one who so much at looked at a benchmark was buying a 3800x or 3600x at launch. 3600 MSRP was $199, 3700X MSRP was $329 at launch. That's a $100 and $120 markup.

It's true for the 5900x and 5950x, sort of. There were retailers who were selling below MSRP for both of them at their respective launches. Although 3950x launched many months later and 3900x had no supply for months.

I sold my wraith prism for $40 and got my CPU for $430 after microcenter discounts. I effectively paid $390 for a 3900x within a few weeks of a launch. Even if the 5900x has similar discounts, it'd cost $480. But honestly, the 5900x and 5950x are going to have premium prices because they have no competition at all. It's the 6c/8c pricing that is the issue, because intel is giving more perf/$ than those MSRPs.

I think Microcenter isnt stocking any 2XXX series parts anymore. They do still have the 3200G/3400G which are Zen+, though.

e: they also dont seem to be stocking the 3100/3300 which is strange. That $150 deal for a 2700X is still not a bad deal today. I guess with the 3600 at $179 -$20 board credit deal that Microcenter has would be what most people should get anyway now, but still.

When you've got the best, you get to raise prices.

On the other hand, this has cemented my decision to just buy a R7 3700X, which is good enough for me, cheaper, and available now. Now, to see if retailers have sales to clear out inventory...

It's a recognition of the fact that it's a $300 mountain bike, which all but requires the bike to be basically trash. So if Steve tries to do any real mountain biking with it like he normally does, it could end...poorly.

Yes, new silicon node. Zen 3 is using the same node and IO, mainly moving to 8 cores per CCX instead of 4, it seems like.

By AMD's determination, they considered Zen->Zen2 an evolution step in the actual architectural design of the cores (obviously everything else was changed), Zen 3 the big arch leap forward, and Zen 4 is another evolution.

But like Vir pointed out, its moving to a new process and will have a new IO die (with DDR5+PCIe5). The downside is that it wont be around until 2022, and it seems like Zen3+ is real and going to fill the gap.

Zen 2 released July 2019 so does that mean Zen 4 won’t come until maybe Jan 2022? I wonder if it’s worth waiting for.

For the Intel comparable, Sandy Bridge was a huge architectural jump and Ivy Bridge, even though it was on a new node, was a smaller jump.
