Chrpno posted:It's not that horrible, but here's a homegrown failure, this thread has given me great entertainment so I should contribute. I wondered why the car was getting so hot idling, so I got the water pump out: Kinda related: a friend's 1st gen Kia Optima was overheating at idle. It'd usually run okay (sometimes warm - like 2/3 up the gauge warm) cruising down the road, very little heat from the heater no matter what you did. Head gasket was fine. Radiator was full of rusty... crap. No thermostat. Slapped a thermostat in, flushed it, same thing, but regulated a little better at highway speeds. Every shop swore up and down the water pumps never go out and aren't normally done with the timing belt (did I mention it was way overdue for a timing belt?). He finally got the timing belt done, and insisted they do the water pump. The water pump impellers were.... gone. Just tiny nubs of rust. One of the radiator hoses had been replaced with a generic flexible hose, I'm guessing the PO decided to just run straight water in it after the hose replacement? I'm amazed the engine survived that. Last time I talked to him before losing touch, he was still driving it a couple of years later. randomidiot fucked around with this message at 15:37 on Oct 4, 2020 |

Combat Theory posted:New radiator it is Let's not be hasty, now. If the bigger pieces made it to the radiator, they should be confined to the one tank they arrived in, and you should be able to rinse them out of the removed radiator. The rest of it (engine) should be back-flushed to get the tiny bits out. The alternative to flushing: Try installing a rare-earth magnet through the largest opening in the radiator (top hose, or fill neck) to catch any lingering tiny bits of steel. Secure it with stainless-steel wire and check it daily at first. PainterofCrap fucked around with this message at 16:19 on Oct 4, 2020 |

I recall some goon years ago went to change the water pump on his jeep cherokee with 4.0l straight six and had the same issue. Might have even been in this thread. But in fairness, water pumps on those engines were probably only put on "just because everyone else uses one too".

Good idea with the magnets, but it's running like a dream now and I live in pretty much the hottest place on earth. It's only a cheap convertible so I'll sit tight and hope 16 years of corrosion have done their job.

Interestingly, I was told by the internet (here, probably) that I should do the water pump on our Kia Spectra5 when I changed the timing belt. I elected not to at that time (first time it needed to be changed), but I absolutely understand why you might want to, given where it is. It's a mightaswell, like doing the clutch if you have the trans out, even if it's not strictly necessary.

In my experience water pumps tend not to last as long as two timing belts.CarForumPoster posted:The outlet of the water pump goes directly to the radiator, yea? Usually the radiator goes directly to the water pump inlet.

Factory water pump in my landcruiser made it to 300k kms and was still going, juuuust starting to get a bit of a rumble in the bearing when I did the timing belt for the second time. Bought and fitted another genuine with genuine coolant after that!

I had an Alfa 156 that needed the timing belt and everything I read said I should change the water pump and a few other things to the later model year parts due to the older ones failing. Pulled the water pump out and yep it was the old plastic one and was already sticking. I mean it was an Alfa so I was just prolonging the inevitable.

Oh by the way, after the water pump fixing and everything else, I dropped a screw down the back of the gearbox firewall. Got underneath and started groping around, hmm there's something in the frame, feels like oily grass and sticks? Lemme pull some out... ohh it's a feather... ohhh it's a whole goddam dead bird jammed up in there. Gross. RIP little tweeter

RIP little tweeter I did the same with a 'weird rattle in the front' of my '94 Mitsu Diamante YEARS ago. It wasn't a loose bolt or nut or 10mm socket, it was a sun-dried frog rattling between the bumper and radiator.

It's a mightaswell, like doing the clutch if you have the trans out, even if it's not strictly necessary. My rule of thumb is if it's an interference engine or timing belt driven pump, the water pump gets changed with the timing belt, full stop. It's usually enough of a PITA to get at a timing belt on a FWD car that I do it as a "while I'm in here" job. Like the clutch when the trans is out, unless the clutch is already new. Or the rear crank seal when doing a clutch job. I want to say back then Kia said the water pump was supposed to be good for 100k, while the timing belt was... 50-60k? I just googled a bit on the timing belt service, and found a bunch of forum posts saying the water pumps weren't normally included as part of the timing belt service back then (on the 1st gen Optima anyway), and that some Kia dealers didn't even keep them on the shelf.

That frame did not enjoy itself. Edit: V It looks like oil and coolant. If he's lucky it's just the oil pan, but that's a hefty chunk of something that falls out. I don't know what BMW pans are made of, but most I've seen from other cars are nothing more than stamped steel.

That's the oil pan ripped off, right? I can't imagine coolant looking like that unless it was thirty years old and rusty (not out of the question, I guess) and if it were coolant there should be at least some steam.
