getting paid that for part or even all of a single year is between a third and a tenth of what you'd need to retire at 65 years old, today

The Management is what his name implies. there are a handful of yospos apple/google goons making $300k+ and acting like that's normal and not especially wealthy, even for computer touching in san francisco. it's the usual brain worms where the marginal utility of additional dollars decreases dramatically past 6 figgies so people feel like they're not "rich" despite personally earning six times the average american household income.

my landlord's son and daughter in law are corporate counsel for apple and a specialist surgeon, respectively, pulling down something like $800k combined. they complain that they can't afford a reasonable house on the peninsula to raise their family in, because they want a 5 bedroom place in the most expensive part of cupertino.

interestingly lowtax didn’t sell sa-llc, he sold the assets, which implies that he assigned stuff like his house and car to the llc. so sa-llc could have been at a huge deficit even while the site was doing fine.

i think that's what everyone figured too. presumably the llc owns all of lowtax's stuff, for tax/alimony reasons

Jeffrey of YOSPOS posted:

Fwiw, without making any final commitments, I am leaning away from xenforo. I think it is actively an open question whether it'd be less work to modernize the current code, or port enough features to xenforo to make it feel like home. Complete rewrites are always alluring when you have a crusty old system but they often make things worse. There's a reasonable chance that migrating will mean we end up with something that sorta feels like SA but not really, and everyone hates it.

Modernizing the code is also a big undertaking but it's a lot easier to do incrementally and not like, some impossible dream. There are some strange decisions but it's not as bad as I expected when I showed up. I kinda love our stupid software and I think, ideally, we'd keep the 2002 look and feel while adding in all manner of modern conveniences.

Jeffrey of YOSPOS posted:

See I don't think it's quite at "insane hacked together unreadable garbage". It's....old, and there are some pretty questionable decisions, but it at least crosses the bar of "readable". I think the radium blame was exaggerated - he was no brilliant mastermind planning for 2020, but he wasn't The Worst Programmer Ever and he sincerely did some pretty cool stuff to make vbulletin scale to how many users we had. I would very much like to hear his side of the story and would be pretty happy if he came and posted.

I can't believe he's considering not throwing away a code base that seems to work very well for it's purpose.
