I HATE guys that open carry.

This is pathetically hilarious, and at this point in my life/this timeline, I’d be hard pressed not to laugh in that guy’s face and make fun of him even more if I was in that situation.

That word is an offensive term for women, the mod tried to ban it, a bunch of people pitched a fit and made circular non-sensical arguments about how “actually that’s not how we mean it but yes it is what the word means but not what we meant”.

Which lead to Tomarse’s “haha you guys are c***s but I’m not going to say it but I’m gonna make you think it lol” super funny gotcha

I understand that the c-bomb is considered the most offensive word in American English but you must try to understand that different cultures view it differently.

Other anglophone countries may not have the same emotional response attached to the word. I’m not trying to advocate for it’s use here, personally I try to limit its use it my everyday language despite living in a country and working in an industry where it is seen as punctuation rather than a slur.

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to have a discussion about it, but bear in mind that part of what makes AI so great is the diversity of its membership. Simply trying to ban something because you find it offensive is not a great way to engage with people and find a solution that’s acceptable to all parties.

A lot of cultures have come around to the fact that referring to something in a negative way using a word associated with something else is offensive whether or not the (typically quite privileged) person doing so thinks so or “means it that way” or not.

I appreciate the reasonable nature of your approach and I absolutely understand that a fair number of people just don’t understand the implications of such language, but the fact that “it’s still normal here” doesn’t mean it’s not harmful, and it certainly doesn’t add anything to the culture of this forum.

No one tried to ban Australians or Brits in general, and I certainly don’t want Tomarse or anyone else to stop posting, but asking people not to use a word that they agree on the definition of but argue the severity of is not particularly unreasonable.

There’s this weird stigma around “woke culture” being a negative thing, but I think being inclusive is valuable, and having that word littered about here isn’t going to help women (or people who value inclusivity toward women) want to belong here.

Thanks for the reasoned response. You raise some really good points that I hadn't considered and I will absolutely take them on board.

I suspect there is probably a little bit of a subconcious "chip-on-the-shoulder" about deferring to a USA centric point of view amongst other anglophone/5eyes nations. I'm not saying it's right or reasoned, but I think we look at what we percieve as a very broken political/social system in the US and wonder "who are you to be handing out the moral imperative?"

You shared it with a dick.

The bat swooped out of the bathroom tonight, apparently that's where he went instead of outside like we thought. We have a cast iron tub so between that and the shower curtains there were plenty of little crannies to hide in, even though I looked for him there. My brother was coming out after using it and got swooped. He had the presence of mind to shut the door so there was nowhere for the bat to hide - the rest of the house is very open. We opened all 3 doors, one of which was very close to where he was swooping around, and suddenly he wasn't there. So while we still didn't see him exit, confidence is high he is definitely gone this time. Also my dad and brother were there to both witness it and verify that neither of them are :drac:

I'm super glad he didn't decide to wake up while I was showering an hour earlier. I would have been trapped in there with him all naked and would have probably broke a hip scrambling out of the tub. Old cast iron tubs are sketchy for showering to begin with, the bottoms are not flat at all. Mom loved it, but I'll probably get rid of it when I remodel that bathroom.

Running no point.

Military training did an amazing job of removing any glamour around guns for me. They give you an assault rifle on day 1 and it is incredibly cool at first, but they don't give you any ammo and you don't use it for anything so it just becomes a PITA bit of metal you have to take everywhere with you. Then with all the actual training, teaching and using it for realsies on operations it just kind of becomes a "thing" rather than anything of particular interest.

I still enjoy shooting but fetishization of guns and "self defence" is super weird.

I agree that a lot of the gun issues in the US stem from fetishization of guns and the military through culture and media and advertising.

Compare to a lot of countries where service is compulsory, where most people have either been a conscript or know at least one person who is one or an actual soldier. So they've had the gun presented to them as a tool instead of a toy, as well as gone through all the maintenance and cleaning drills. That also means you see people in uniform on public transit regularly and nobody takes any note of it, they're just going to or from wherever they've been stationed.

Of course there's been a lot of cultural osmosis through entertainment and media, so we do see a lot more "american-style" gun enthusiasts now than say 20 years ago.

I originally bought a gun for "protection" because I live in Florida, we get lots of hurricanes and in the aftermath of hurricanes there is almost always issues with looting. Hurricane Andrew years ago was particularly bad in that regard and it left an impression on me, lots of people just trying to survive through it were victimized.

But once I got it I also realized it was pretty fun to shoot at targets, then I met my wife and she had guns and we went shooting together and it was fun :)

(and can't post for 11 years!)

Had a shift from hell the other night (11 hours). I was so sore that I could barely drive when I left - my feet and knees in particular. It doesn't help that Brokeback has a pretty stiff throttle pedal (pretty sure it'll need a cable at some point - it's not sticking, but you have to give it a lot of oomph to get the pedal to move now). Ex lives 2 miles from work, and she's 3 miles from the clinic all of my doctors practice at, so.. glad we're still on good terms. Upstairs apartment which sucks, but I'll take that vs trying to drive the ~30 minutes each way to/from work, 45 minutes from home to the clinic I use..

Welp, been here 2 days. Tried to go to work last night, but couldn't even press the gas or brake in my car without agony, and that's after literally falling into the car instead of gracefully sitting down (it also took me a good 5 minutes just to get from her front door to my car.. that's a 1 minute walk normally). Took the night off. Went to my foot doctor today, had xrays, no arthritis in my feet at least, but he said I have a severe tendinitis flareup in my feet and strongly suggested several days off. Got referred to an orthopedist at the same clinic to take a look at my knees and hips, doing that tomorrow morning.

Pretty sure there's gonna be some arthritis in my knees, they've been stiff as hell for awhile. Hips started bugging me now and then a few months ago, but nothing like this until last night. The xrays will tell all, though.

This is what getting old is like, isn't it? :corsair:

https://www.fastcompany.com/90562654/car-design-is-about-to-change-forever-this-video-encapsulates-how

Edit2: Yeah, I've been drinking, but seriously... that is the distillation of a car. You don't need steering linkage, or power steering, or cooling anywhere near an ICE scale, or anything more than rudimentary brakes (assuming that regen braking can be developed properly). That structure is what a car is. A chassis, a means of propulsion, and fuel. Everything else is comfort.

I find myself stuck between wanting what exists, and longing for what is coming. I really liked the Camaro SS convertible that I Turo'd in Hawaii. But as I think about actually buying one, I see the long-term prospects troubling. A Model 3 would be as-fast, or faster. Plus it would have more space and be so much more cost-friendly in the long term (providing Tesla gets their poo poo together, but even if they don't, another company will), and is going to be obsolete in our lifetime.

Everything is fucky right now, but god drat, there's promise on the horizon that we shouldn't lose track of.

I love the sound of a V8, or even a good 4 or 6, but it's hard to argue with the performance of a good EV, and how well the torque characteristics of an electric motor pair up with what is actually needed in a vehicle.
I look forward very much to near drop-in drivetrain replacements for classics. Sure, keep a few stock and restored, just like we already do, but I want to drive the old stuff without destroying the world. Right now, conversions are more expensive than anything but hoo-boy HP fossil drivetrains, but those prices should come down. I would love to EV one of my non-running RX-7s so... all of them, currently. It would seem appropriate, somehow, even if the lack of ear-splitting angry bees would be wrong.
