Yeah we are now stuck in a nightmare loop of these tech monopolists just pandering to whichever party looks to be winning in an attempt to preserve their power. It will just swing back and forth depending on who wins. I'm sure that Zuckerberg is like six weeks away from banning all photos of guns or something equally as stupid.

Amtrak is expensive though so maybe that’ll help with that argument. (It will not help with that argument) This was all already tried and failed under Obama. Biden loves trains so maybe he’d put more effort into it but it’s still not something to be optimistic about.

I mean, im not dissing on trains because I rode around Europe and Japan on trains, and well maintained, properly funded rail systems are a loving godsend. We can't have nice things like that in the US though, too much entrenched interest in freight rail taking precedence over passenger rail, and also the whole car/highway obsession of everyday Americans.

A real loving train system with schedules that actually are adhered to and stops in sensible areas where you're walking distance to business parks or points of interest are basically my dream. I'd be able to save 90% of the mileage on my vehicle, and only pull it out for recreational traveling, if the train didn't go where I wanted to go.

Let's be real; maintaining a train in Japan is cheaper than in the US because there's less fluids to clean up and damage to restore.

They have an embryonic system that doesn’t do a good job for commuters heading east / west which is where most of the growth has been this century. But that would mean laying new track which is a non-starter here even if it would be a boon to the communities over the medium to long term. But NIMBYs abound and land isn’t free.

Yeah, I imagine outside of the local routes Amtrak gets expensive, but I can get from probably Richmond to Boston for a heckuva lot less effort than driving and price that isn't a deal breaker. If I have to go to downtown Philly, I just take the train now. Its like 60 bucks round trip.

Orlando is one of the worst examples of urban sprawl I’ve ever seen and a rail system would be like 15 minutes between stops. That city is laid out so lovely. Duval County is probably worse though. My business class Amtrak ticket was more expensive than a plane ticket but 1) work paid for it so duh and 2) in the future I will consider the extra expense a comfort tax. It’s the most hassle free method of long distance travel I’ve ever used. Amtrak is like pre-9/11 airports, if anyone remembers what that was like.
