Everyone should play DUKE games.

:dukedog:
The article mentions this later on but it really is amazing how from the get go you see all the flags that this was planned out in a single message board thread:

quote:

After all, in a town with fewer than 800 registered voters, and plenty of property for sale, it would not take much for a committed group of transplants to establish a foothold, and then win dominance of municipal governance. And so the Free Town Project began. The libertarians expected to be greeted as liberators, but from the first town meeting, they faced the inconvenient reality that many of Grafton’s presumably freedom-loving citizens saw them as outsiders first, and compatriots second—if at all. Tensions flared further when a little Googling revealed what “freedom” entailed for some of the new colonists. One of the original masterminds of the plan, a certain Larry Pendarvis, had written of his intention to create a space honoring the freedom to “traffic organs, the right to hold duels, and the God-given, underappreciated right to organize so-called bum fights.” He had also bemoaned the persecution of the “victimless crime” that is “consensual cannibalism.” (“Logic is a strange thing,” observes Hongoltz-Hetling.)

While Pendarvis eventually had to take his mail-order Filipina bride business and dreams of municipal takeovers elsewhere (read: Texas), his comrades in the Free Town Project remained undeterred. Soon, they convinced themselves that, evidence and reactions to Pendarvis notwithstanding, the Project must actually enjoy the support of a silent majority of freedom-loving Graftonites. How could it not? This was Freedom, after all. And so the libertarians keep coming, even as Babiarz himself soon came to rue the fact that “the libertarians were operating under vampire rules—the invitation to enter, once offered, could not be rescinded.” The precise numbers are hard to pin down, but ultimately the town’s population of a little more than 1,100 swelled with 200 new residents, overwhelmingly men, with very strong opinions and plenty of guns.

Grappling with what to do about the bears, the Graftonites also wrestled with the arguments of certain libertarians who questioned whether they should do anything at all—especially since several of the town residents had taken to feeding the bears, more or less just because they could. One woman, who prudently chose to remain anonymous save for the sobriquet “Doughnut Lady,” revealed to Hongoltz-Hetling that she had taken to welcoming bears on her property for regular feasts of grain topped with sugared doughnuts. If those same bears showed up on someone else’s lawn expecting similar treatment, that wasn’t her problem.

In chess, the king never dies. You put him in a situation with no retreat, and then force a surrender, which wins you the battle. It hearkens back to a time when monarchs did lead their troops into battle.

But even then, it's an abstract. You don't bring bishops into battle because they're really good at running at an angle, and you don't bring a castle with you because they're motorized and run down the enemy. Armies don't take turns standing there and letting one person move at a time either. You also certainly don't bring the queen into battle and expect her to run across the battlefield and start murdering the enemy side with reckless abandon.

Well not with that attitude you don't.

Amazing how New Hampshire, while superficially seeming like the sister state to Vermont, became such a creepy loving place while the latter gave the world Bernie Sanders who is practically Karl Marx on the American political spectrum of right, more right, and riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

Edit: Wait, how does NH afford literally anything with no sales or income tax? I have to assume that property taxes are ludicrously high. I lived briefly in one of the other US states with no sales tax and, while it was nice paying list price for items like they do in sensible countries, property taxes were huge.

Further Edit: Holy poo poo, I completely forgot that Dartmouth is in New Hampshire. I was accepted for uni there but didn't go due to the staggering cost, naturally; looks like I dodged a bullet bear.

Lol.

Also, chess has some very, very libertarian vibes to it. Specifically, the idea that a pawn can theoretically advance to the other side of the board and therefore achieve a massive rise in power is super libertarian, as is the reality that most pawns will die pointless deaths in the of the king and those few that survive rarely advance their own powers at all.

Good article. I'm a bit puzzled there weren't more efforts to just machine-gun the bears en masse, given the proclivities of libertarians, but I suspect even that involves a minor level of competence that they lack.

Besides, those guns and bullets are for handling minorities in Libertopia, not wildlife!

The book begins with a chapter on how the US government dealt with the bears- essentially they put up bounties on bear heads and got people to start mass killing the bears to stop them from going near people's homesteads.

There was a section where they organized small groups to go hunt down bears in their dens (which apparently was against state/federal law).

Why would Americans actually do things like stop suburban sprawl, reign in out-of-control population growth and/or do something about climate change when they can murder something?

I know that there are a lot of Americans in this thread, but you know as well as I do that it's a terrifyingly violent culture.

Aw, I was hoping they'd do the standard libertarian thing of "government thing x distorts the market, so I will simply exploit it by doing y" and it went about as well as that always goes but with how well farming bears would go added on top.

I got through some more of the book- the libertarians have arrived. The bears came before most of them, but I believe I am soon to get to the part of the book where the libertarians clash with the bears.

The highlights of the libertarians so far are the one who barely beat a child pornography charge and their ability to try to sue with an incredibly bad success rate(including trying to use the old 'travelling' thing to claim the state can't mandate driver's licenses). The 'communist' survivalist is mentioned. He had a Taurus Judge and mentioned that when the poo poo hit the fan the libertarians were going to literally cannibalize themselves and he would deal with the last one who would be sitting atop the bones of the other libertarians. He also said capitalism was bullshit which is where the communist statement comes from.

One of the things that's starting to happen is that the libertarians with no money and no friends are trying to camp in bear territory and I believe this is a recipe for people getting owned.
