Forgive me if this is stupid. But I have questions about Chinese citizenship.

Does China allow dual-citizenship? Or do you have to renounce your Chinese citizenship/passport to get citizenship of another country.

My dad is Indian born, and had to renounce his Indian citizenship to get his Australian citizenship/passport, but India allowed him to get a PIO, (Person of Indian Origin) card thing that allows him visa free entry and exit into and out of India for the rest of his life, (so long as he keeps paying the annual fee.). As my brother and I were born in Aus, we don't qualify. Does China offer something similar for it's expats/diaspora?

I ask the same questions as above re: Taiwan citizenship, and also HK passport holders.

A related question, can foreign citizens become Party members? Surely there are tankies out there begging to become full members of the CCP. And if so, are these foreign party members subject to the same scrutiny/rules/oppression as local ones? (i.e. a poster here said his party member father in law had to keep his passport at the local party office.)

Sorry again if these are stupid questions.

China does not allow dual nationality. To hold a Chinese passport you are required to give any up others.

Stores abound of Chinese nationals who were married and living abroad who went to renew their passport but having their Chinese passport cut in half and handed back to them.

Ouch!

As regards Party etc membership, there will be rules regarding highest promotion possible and accepted spousal requirements (people of a certain rank will not be permitted to marry non Chinese). Most countries have similar stuff for military (officer class obv).

for the majority of areas where it will be deployed you won't really notice a difference. it will probably be faster but for most places there's no reason to do a mmWave deployment which is the one that everyone is jizzing themselves about.

3G is faster than 4G at peak times where I live because everyone connects via 4G. I know this is not because of the tech but still

5G is currently pointless here in Canada because our data plans are so piss poor you'd run through your monthly allotment in record time if you actually made use of the speeds for anything like downloading or streaming.

Like the average data package is something like 4 GB maybe?

gently caress Canadian Internet/Mobile plans forever. When I was with Bell I had to log into every streaming site/service and dial down the bitrate/quality so we wouldn't get hit with overage charges half way through the month, and we're not big screen fiends either.

My mom is 2km too far away to get DSL, so her options are Satellite/Turbo Hub which offer pitiful amounts of bandwidth per month, but are fast enough to auto-load HD video in YouTube/Netflix. If she tried to watch a movie or two she'd likely got hit with overage charges. Last summer my brother's computer was uploading/syncing with his cloud service and racked up $600 in overages in one month.

Thank you for all the replies. Yes, it's all currently pointless. But that could also have been said about every older standard before it. (Maybe a good subject for a philosophical paper about tech/life?)

To tie this all back to China: What's really crap is if something that is hyped as 5G isn't even 5G.

WASHINGTON — Chinese officials have told the Trump administration that security officers in China might detain American citizens if the Justice Department proceeds with prosecutions of arrested scholars who are members of the Chinese military, American officials said.

The Chinese officials conveyed the messages starting this summer, when the Justice Department intensified efforts to arrest and charge the scholars, mainly with providing false information on their visa applications, the American officials said. U.S. law enforcement officials say at least five Chinese scholars who have been arrested in recent months did not disclose their military affiliations on visa applications and might have been trying to conduct industrial espionage in research centers.

Taiwan does not allow dual citizenship, but lots of Taiwanese are dual passport holders.

If you move to Taiwan and want to become Taiwanese, you have to give up your previous nationality. Even then, it's not a guarantee that your citizenship will be approved. Taiwan is notorious for how reluctant it is to create new Taiwanese nationals. Hell, it often makes the news. There's been outrage in the expat community because Taiwan loves to make a big deal over rewarding someone with citizenship but it's frequently like a priest or an elderly pensioner, basically people unlikely to have children who would then be Taiwanese. Meanwhile people who have lived their entire adult lives in Taiwan, are married to Taiwanese people, have children, pay taxes, and speak Chinese are usually limited to permanent resident status and can never vote.

Taiwanese who hold dual citizenship do so because they were Taiwanese first. The government doesn't inquire if you have a second citizenship. Some people are pretty dumb about it though and enter Taiwan on the wrong passport (which is super illegal) and try to avoid military service. I wouldn't recommend that.

Not necessarily, they have been trying to make strategic inroads with Pacific island countries through low-interest loans, etc. Far easier to bribe/push around little Pacific countries with small populations and economies than larger places like Sri Lanka, etc. It's been making the rounds in policy circles for the last few years.

The ABC ran an article about it recently, mentioning they've seemingly withdrawn/slashed aid in the last year or two. Not a lot of explanation as to why though.

no why

From memory, Americans have a sort of backdoor "sike" to renouncing their nationality whereby if you aren't doing it 100% because you want to renounce it (such as having to do so to acquire foreign citizenship), it basically doesn't "count" as genuine and you can get it back later.

Some guy thought he'd be clever and do that to naturalise in Japan, but naturally with FBAR reporting his bank caught him and long story short Japan yanked his citizenship, womp womp.

I've met plenty of adults who have been skating by on what's essentially "don't ask, don't tell" wrt their citizenship acquired at birth, I don't think there's a big appetite for enforcement from the governments involved. I met one or two people who renounced their Japanese citizenship to do JET, also a Singaporean guy who was on his way to his 4th passport.

As you say though, many of these same governments are *very* stingy about offering naturalisation to foreign residents.

I liked that guy who's been a famous journalist there and lived in Taiwan since like 1948 and is still always referred to as foreigner in the press. "Foreigner, who has been in Taiwan longer than 90% of the population has been alive, says,"

It's more like that the American government has to accept their resignation. Since FBAR, this was a pain in the rear end. It was made an even bigger pain in the rear end since that one Facebook investor renounced his citizenship to avoid paying hundreds of millions in taxes. Renouncing your citizenship can take a decade and cost a ton of money.

The UK explicitly say if you renounced your citizenship to get a passport elsewhere, we'll just give you it back.

If you have over 10k USD in a foreign bank at any point of the tax year, you're supposed to file. You don't owe anything, just have to let the IRS know it's out there.

There are also some requirements for the banks on reporting the assets of American citizens, which prompted some of them to just boot all of their American clients when it came into effect :v:

Ah well lol at the idea having anything close to 10k USD. Though with my dad's estate likely to pay off my student loans I will have to start considering what it's like to have a bank account above zero at the end of the month.
